Thanks for asking! Things are fine in Sydney, hot but fine!

Canberra, on the other hand, is an absolute disaster. 388 homes have been lost and 4 people so far have died, with a couple more in critical condition in hospital.
I don't recall there ever having been bushfires there before - it's a suburban area. This may account for the size of the disaster - fires would not be expected and they may not have been well prepared. They may not have had the numbers of firefighters. It usually takes a fire risk to get people to join the Rural Fire Service as volunteers.

For whatever reason, this is one of the worst fires ever, with regard to property loss, although not in lives lost. That dubious honour still belong to the Ash Wednesday fires some years back. And the fires are not controlled yet.

Saturday hit the all-time high of 45C (113 F) for this summer - damn hot!! It was also registered at Parramatta - right in the geographical heart of Sydney.

Latest in on the fires, more than 400 buildings destroyed, including the Stromlo Observatory. No new deaths. There are also bushfires in the Southern state of Victoria.

Oh my people, how terrible. I am keeping you all in my prayers and still "raindancing" ... sometimes it takes awhile to work.

I have the heat on today, sunny and mild, but cold in the house.

High: 61° F
Low: 35° F
UV Index: 5 (Moderate)
Today: Abundant sunshine. High 61F. Winds NW at 10 to 15 mph.
Tonight: Mostly clear. Low near 35F. Winds light and variable.

It's an overcast, grey, day for us in Northern California, today. I must start shifting some furniture and my computer out of the second bedroom to prepare for grandma to move in with us during the first week of February, so I'll keep busy inside. Wink c.i.

Still damned hot here - supposed to be down to 83 F today - but I am unsure if anyonr has told the weather! And now it is muggy. Sigh. back up to 106 F by Friday, though.

Still, we are not burning up - yet. More fires threatening Canberra - hopefully the fire folk from other states are arriving by now - but most places are expecting their own fires in these conditions...

It is very cold today in the Boston area. With the wind chill factor, it's easily -3 F. On Tuesday, we expect to be -20F with the wind.

Very cold, if you have to walk a distance. Shocked
