The Somerset "levels" were once a swamp anyway, no? Did not Alfred the Better Than Mediocre hide out in Althelney in the Somerset swamp back in the day? Is this a case of Mother Nature (the Definitely Great) sending a little reminder?

Yes, his great aunt, Matilda the Always Ready, sent him off on a baking course, thinking that if he could perfect a Danish Pastry, we would have no further need of Vikings and he could kick the buggers out without denying the population their sticky sweet baked goods.

Alas, he burnt stuff, and set the pattern for British cuisine for the next thousand years.

Not to drift away too far away from the humor ... for those curious readers, Sheygitz is a ... "Yiddish word that has entered English to refer to a non-Jewish boy or young man. Although shegetz, like its feminine counterpart shiksa" ...

is not the literal translation but it's close enough.

"The term "sheiketz" is used by the Torah uses to describe non-kosher fish and animals, ..."

Furthermore, the related Yiddish and Hebrew word "schochet" means butcher.

@farmerman,
I had a Chelmvolk when I was in my twenties. It had no power steering, and was always going into ditches on bends.

@Lordyaswas,
My brothers and i bought a '53 Caddy which had a similar problem--but it had power steering which kept going out at critical times. We were young and dumb--it took us a while to realize the belt was slipping. By that time, the car was no longer worth saving. It was a hell of a ride, though.

@Lordyaswas,
Speaking of duvets, we've got a song we sing that is dedicated to one of our pioneers, "Duvet, Duvet Crocket, King of the Wild Frontier"

@Walter Hinteler,
The German Weather Service usually issues pollen forecasts in March or April, but this year they were put out as early as January.

This "winter" will go down as (one of) the warmest winters in 250 years.
And this first days in March are already the warmest ever recorded.
Anna Wieczorek from the German Weather Service says it's possible there will be another bout of really warm weather before the month is over, although it's too early to say whether this March could be really Germany's hottest on record.

One of our "local" storks (they are back four weeks earlier than usually)

Oh, shut up, Walter.

It is supposed to snow this morning, and the temperature is supposed to drop to minus ten.

How the hell do the storks know it's OK to come back to Germany. Do they watch the weather channel?
