@Lustig Andrei,
Thanks Andrei, that's interesting, didn’t know that.

I do recall taking the trip to Maui Haleakala sunrise volcano tour, it sure was cold at the top of the volcano!

@jcboy,
We did that on one of our very early visits to Hawaii when our kids were young. We thought just a few of us would be there, but found a huge crowd up there waiting for the sun to appear. Yea, I remember, it was very cold up there!

@jcboy,
Thing is, the temps -- and the weather in general -- have a lot more to do with the altitudes here than the time of the year. On the Big Island especially the weather can be quite different on the Kona coast than in Hilo. It may be raining steadily on the East coast while drought conditions persist on the (northern) Kohala peninsula. And so on. And the higher you go the chillier it gets. Volcano is 4,000 feet above sea level, so you can see why there'd be a variation between its weather and Hilo.

I'm not your biggest weather maven. I remember extremely high snow in our yard in the chicago area in the early fifties, or it was to me, 20 to 30 inches sometimes. I remember blizzards, especially the day we moved there. I also remember spring...
and snow on easter in April one year.

Los Angeles is routinely changeable, what with the Santa Ana winds. There was a certain I Love Lucy show with the ladies getting sunburned at some odd time.

This makes me wonder about irrigation practices - if any - in more northern climes, and the opposite - is there any equivalent to the old orange grove frost pots (we replaced those with beige housing).

@ossobuco,
You mean the things we used to call 'smudge pots'? I wouldn't be a bit surprised to learn that they had been banned. As a side note, in South Florida where the frost danger was so low their costs couldn't be justified, they used to keep piles of old tires in the fields (not groves). With a frost warning, they would prime them with kerosine and burn them. They worked as well for short cold snaps.

@roger,
Yikes! And I never smelled smudge pots, with my odd nose. But I assume there could be some improvement for warming over all these years, if CA still had groves (I presume some people still grow them, as even I had a lemon tree).

@ossobuco,
We have a lemon tree in our back yard that produces the fruit year-round. I have to trim the branches back every year, because they grow so fast.

@cicerone imposter,
When I was a kid we use to go up to the Silicone valley every couple of months. My parents owned a home in Los Gatos so we always stayed there; it wasn’t far from San Francisco so we would drive there in half an hour or so. I miss that area! But not the cold! Cool

@jcboy,
It takes longer than a half hour to drive from Los Gatos to San Francisco. It's about 52 miles - and takes about one hour depending on traffic.

After mid-70s yesterday, they are projecting a low of 32 tonight. Yep, that's freezing.

April 15 is not only Tax Day, it's our official frost-free date, too. That's only 5 days away. A bunch of flowers & budding shrubs and trees are at risk, not to mention the almost-ready-to-burst azaleas.

@Eva,
wore a down coat and shearling lined clogs today

they're promising (?) either snow or freezing rain or ice pellets over night

possibility of snow over the next 4 or 5 days

no significant accumulation anticipated

likely just enough to be annoying

@ehBeth,
wo, had 81 yesterday and todays supposed to be down in the early 60's. Thats really more like it. I hate it when it goes from winter to summer in a day.

I heard that everyone in Toronto is happy that your summer falls on a weekend.

I just got back home some of my friends' place. We were watching the UVA vs Brigham Young football game and enjoying a picnic here in Charlottesville. The game started at 3:30 and finally ended at 8:30.
God, did it rain! They cleared the field at the end of the 1st quarter due to the lightening. And the 60,000 fans probably got really, really wet as 4" of rain rained down.
UVA won, by the way, with a last minute score.

@Butrflynet,
I knew I shouldn't have tried to drive down that street.

Just kidding,, but we did have high winds and lots of rain in a short time. I haven't been where I would see the damage.
