I am trying to prepare my body and mind for that Russian freeze. However, I would absolutely prefer Sydney weather!

eastern lake ontario : another mild and sunny day.
still no ice on this end of the lake. by late january the eastern end of the lake is usually frozen over from the shoreline to wolfe island - about five miles across. we could skate, walk and often drive a car right across to the island - but not this year.
the ferry connecting wolfe island to the mainland has a "bubble system" operating in the winter and a tugboat on standby to shove the ice out of the shipping channel - not needed this year.
several hundreds of ducks are still lining the shoreline diving for food and generally enjoying the mild weather.
most unusual and mild winter that we've had in the almost 50 years we've lived here. hbg

walter : the temps you are showing , are what in past years we would have experienced in spring. overnight temperatures down to minus 35 C - from about mid-december to the end of february - were the norm until the late eighties.
during the 1980's i drove a VW-golf diesel and in the winter i plugged the blockheater in and used an electric battery blanket. one also had to mix the diesel fuel with about 10% gasoline to prevent the diesel from gelling - it happenened the first winter i had the car, quite an experience.
when the temperature would drop quickly after sunset - the days were usually very sunny and bright - the beams in the house would start to creak and groan .
these last few years have been relatively mild.

pull the earflaps over your ears !

hope for spring ! hbg

Walter's map there shows that we are in the warm part of Germany - just a bit north of Lake Constance (Bodensee). But it feels very cold outside! It was - 10°C this morning when I was driving to work.

eastern lake ontario :
bright and sunny day. this morning it was a little on the cool side - minus 11 C, came just back from a walk and it is now plus 3 C.
certainly very mild for a canadian winter.
have had hardly any snow to shovel since early december. when we had about 30 cm.
would actually be better if we had a snow cover on the ground. hbg
