In Austria, I posted about the weather there yesterday, the Austrian army evacuated 500 guests - half of them schoolchildren on a ski course - from an alpine village isolated by avalanches today. (That was 10 miles away from the in-laws - they are well, btw)

no sunshine at all today, even though it was promised. much of southern and eastrn ontario is under smog alert, very unusual for this time of the year. this is apparently caused by a low warm air mass trapped (capped is what the weather experts call it) under a large mass of cold air. the smog should dissipate when we get an inflow of colder air next week. ... puzzling ... hbg

hamburger, we had poor air quality on Thursday. WE NEVER have poor air quality in Iowa. There was a stagnant air mass then. Looks like you have it now. If it's any consolation, it was near 50 today. Look for it about Monday.

eastern lake ontario : nice and sunny today. about minus 10 C overnight, plus 4 C (40 F) at noon. lake ontario still has a good ice cover, fair number of people out on the ice just walking - some probably as much as a mile offshore - , others skating or playing icehockey; the squirrels are out chasing each other, and lots of birds chirping. spring can't be far off, but the forecast calls for cooling trend in another week or so (will keep the longjohns handy). hbg

weather or not
mctag and anyone interested in weather stats ; here is a good site on canadian weather extremes. we are neither the coldest nor the hottest, but ... . as far as ottawa is concerned, it did fall to about minus 30 to 35 C in january; they also reach plus 30 C in the summer . we are about 150 km south-west of ottawa and did have lows of minus 25 C in january - measured at our house in the suburbs and at the kingston weather station at the airport(yes, we also reach plus 30 or even 35 in the summer). are you going to tell us who won the bet ? hbg >>> IT'S COLD HERE

'Twas a beautiful day today, 76F, mild and sunny. However, we have another cold front moving in tonight, into the 30's ... quite a change!
Someone sent me a pps show today of the great 2005 snowfall in Boston ... I'm not complaining, believe me! The pictures were almost unbelieveable!

Would you believe 38F tonight in Florida? Highs will be 60's for the weekend.
I hear you'all are thawing out up north?

Hot, then cold. Rain, then sunshine. Then sticky hot.
Toss and turn to get to sleep, THEN stumble out to get a comforter/quilt/doona from off the line where I have been airing it because it is COLD now!! However, it is covered in bugs that don't like the cold either! Negotiate truce with bugs - builders turn up at dawn to commence building. Bugs complain that they don't get their beauty sleep - I spray them with bugspray, wish I could do the same to the builders. Cranky at work.
If any of you mob has a SUV I am gonna wax your ass for this!!

eastern lake ontario : daytime temp just around freezing, a bit of sunshine, still a few nights ahead with temps of minus 10 to 12 C, but daytime just be just around freezing. some sailboarders seem to have trouble waiting for the ice to break up in the lake, saw a about half a dozen sail/snowboarders that had modified their gear and were scooting across the ice of lake ontario - despite warnings that there are gaps in the icecover. fire dept has been called out several times this winteer to rescue people and dogs that ventured out too far. hbg

Gaps in the ice? That's scary Hamburger!
It's warming up again in Florida, which is why I can deal with the cold days we do get, they usually only last a couple of days, then back to normal.
It was a gorgeous day today, with sunshine and in the 60's.

Weather for the coming week is going to be fantastic, in the 80's, and I'm lovin' it!
I'm sure we'll have at least one more cold spell before Easter, and since it's early this year, that's quite alright!

Taking the snow tires off before Easter!
That's daring.
The dogs are enjoying the little flurries we've been getting for the last day and a half. Definitely crisp temperatures. Not going out without gloves/hats/scarves yet.

Snow, snow and more snow...
I was on a business trip to Lisbon all last week. The weather there was great - sun and blue skies all week. While it was snowing in Germany and still is.
Now I am watching the flight departures of Stuttgart airport on the internet. I am supposed to fly to Brussels in three hours. That should be interesting...
Please! Someone! Stop that snow!

We had a lovely snow for the holiday (President's Day) .
I told my boss that I used to be the President of my bowling league, but he still insisted that I show up for work.
New York in the snow of early morning is beautifully stark, lots of dark buildings draped with white white snow, but by midday it had all mostly turned to a blackish slush with icy spots on all the sidewalks in front of the stores who had the sense to take the day off.
The rain today should finish all that off.

Just had to share this tidbit: Was in Antarctica where the weather was "freezing" cold, then one week later, I was in Asia (Singapore, Vietnam and Cambodia) where the weather was about 100 degrees F with 90 percent humidity. Talk about extremes! LOL

eastern lake ontario : went for a short drive this morning to "gananoque" (yes, it is spelled correctly - it's about 15 miles from the 1,000 islands bridge connecting ontario and new york state). fresh snow fell overnight and the sight was just beautiful; the trees were snow covered, the st. lawrence river frozen solidly and glistening in the sun ; really a "winter wonderland". by thursday morning we expect a temp of MINUS 21 C, that's a litttle too much for this time of the year. checked the historical records for last five years and normal low should be around minus 10 C. well, we'll just wait another two to three months and the tulips will be out.hbg
