We're back to 40's and 50's this week in sunny Florida. The wind isn't howling tonight as it has been, which makes it a little better.

Hope you're all keeping warm and the hot toddy's ready:)

Hamburger has sent some of the cold down this way to New York. How cold is it? Yesterday morning I saw a woman with a large dog standing near the fence across the street from my apartment. The dog was laying a huge turd and what appeared to be about a half a gallon of whiz upon it.
Completing his mission the dog joyfully pranced around the woman while she pulled on the leash. By the time she got him settled down and reached into her pocket to to get the pick-up-the-poo bag, the stuff was just about frozen to the pavement. Being the good and intrepid New Yorker that she was, she stepped over to some waiting trash bags and got a hunk of cardboard with which she managed to chisel most of the deposit off of the sidewalk and into her bag.

I've never in my life seen an inch of snow shut down half a state! No one was prepared. Thousands of students spent the night at school here in Raleigh.

School was out an hour and a half early (1:30) and a neighbor finally got home with our son a little after 9 PM. Those that couldn't get picked up had to stay. And, by "couldn't, I mean they were closeing roads all over the city and not letting anyone through.

More coming in tonight. Thanks Mr and Mrs. Hamburger! This is really fun stuff!

the arctic high is hanging in here in eastern ontario; this morning it was minus 17 C. for the next three nights we've been promised lows of about minus 25 C. it is beginning to warm up in the prairies - a long distance away - , calgary temp was PLUS 10 C this morning. by the middle of the next week the forecast is for rain - i guess it's the temporary 'january thaw '. we've had nice sunshine, so we don't mind getting bundled up and going for walk. . . only two more months and spring will be here . hbg

BTW, when that arctic high took the low road across North Carolina yesterday our daughters bus slid into a ditch. The entire busload (45 students) walked home. Since roads had been closed and the bus was not on its regular course, this ended up being 5+ miles for most of the students.

She came in the door (us not even aware she was walking home!) saying "I NEVER want to hear any more from you two about walking five miles home from school in the cold and snow!!"

I remided her that her trip was fairly flat and that her father and I had to do so up hill both ways! Laughing

EVERY weather person here is saying they had no idea and that there was no way the given conditions should have produced anything more than a few minutes of light flurries.

The weather, it is a changin'.

I keep thinking I'll see the following want ad:

Estimator wanted , accuracy in predictions not all together important;
Can be wrong as many as two times out of three without jeopordizing
position and estimates of production, direction, attitude and temperature need never to be reviewed.

Must be able to take gentle jibing from co-workers on occasion, offset by inappropriate thanks being offered for pleasant results that are completely beyond your control.

Contact the WEATHER CHANNEL for more information.

Very clever Joe ... you KNOW I wish that ad were for real because the weathermen in this area would never make it. If it were not for satellite images, duh! Why do we need weathermen? We can all read the views!

It's been a nice week in Florida, temps were in the 60's and 70's, pretty typical.

Tomorrow, it is to get very cold with frost warnings! Hmmmmmmmmm!

Speaking of 60s and 70s, Misti, that's what wind gusts are expeted to be in Boston today -- miles per hour, that is. Temp. is about 10 degrees F. right now and falling. There's about 18 inches+ of snow on the ground right now and continuing. Plows can't keep up so there are no cars moving outside my window. By the time it ends sometime this p.m. (could be late evening), total accumulation is expected to be between two and three feet and perhaps as much as 38 inches. I have a feeling schools may be cancelled tomorrow.

PS -- Cape Cod is getting it worse than the city, so I hear.

My sympathies MA ... I just spoke to some relatives in Norwood, they have 4 ft. of snow and freezing temps.

As my ever so positive aunt stated, spring is around the corner.

It's cold in Florida tonight, 42F, nothing like you're experiencing. We expect it to drop into the 20's tonight, if that's any consolation.

Keep warm:)

It's no consolation, Misti. I'm not into schadenfreude, so your being miserably cold does not make me happy in any way at all.

hmmmm
that warming trend they predicted for the middle of next week hasn't quite arrived yet
there's a windchill advisory again
exposed flesh will freeze in 15 minutes

"do not let your pets stay outside"

my little canine companions haven't had a proper run in just about a week now. we're all very sad about that. 5 minutes bouts of the three of us chasing each other around the yard just isn't enough for Bailey and me.

yes, spring is just around the corner ... but which one ? right now it's pretty cold in eastern ontario : minus 15 C going to minus 25 C overnight with windchill forecast at minus 35 C ... brrr ! one good thing about the extreme cold is that it should kill of a lot of pesky insect eggs; so there is hope we'll have fewer nasty critters next summer. there is always a silver lining, isn't there ? lake ontario is frozen over between kingston - wolfe island and the new york state side. the queen's university students have been out on the ice building hockey and skating rinks, and quite a few students are out on the ice - we've had nice sunshine - for a game of pickup hockey. by next week daytime temperatures are to reach freezing point. we'll probably have a few watermain breaks when the frost comes out of the ground - already had a major break in the east-end of the city. hbg

We have nice weather again, in the low 70's, at least until next Tuesday.

I'm lovin' it!

i think i'm having spring fever. watched the weather channel before leaving for the swimming pool at 7:30 this morning. it showed the temperature as minus 25 C; so i told mrs h to wait for a couple of minutes to give the car a chance to wake up. when i went outside and checked the thermometer; it showed minus 21 C. so i shouted through the open side-door : "it's ONLY minus 21 ". mrs h thought i sounded outright giddy. by tomorrow we should be reaching minus 5 C - ready for a walk along lake ontario ! hbg

In Boston, there's a chance we might hit a positive Celsius number tomorrow, Mr. H. They're talking "low 30s" Fahrenheit.

Looks like a good week in Florida, low 70's. Today was overcast and soft rain in between periods of sun and more sun!
