One of the upsides of living in a place with long winters is that we don't have or need air conditioning in the summer. I'm not sure it matters though, with as much as we spend on heat.

Roger, electric here is pretty cheap. We have coal plants and a few wind farms. However, it's impossible to know how much if any savings we would get if we bought an electric furnace. For now we'll do the windows and insulate the house and hope for the best.

The converse goes for us in Hotter climates; I didn't even know what heating oil was until this year.

Of course, the summer electric bills get high, but...

the summer bills stay pretty low here if you use ceiling fans.
I was ignorant to those wonderful inventions when i first moved to austin. I thought they were decoration. HAH!
turn your AC down or off over night because it isnt that hot at night and keep the fans on high.
I think all but 2 nights this summer , I did just that.
Kept bills down quite a but.

My air bill (electricity bill) was (gulp!) $125 last month. Normally, the bill is around $40-50.

What I wonder is why any of you are complaining.
Many of you have said we need to conserve energy,we need to stop driving our cars, etc.

Many of the treehuggers say that high energy prices are good for the countries environment.
Now,you are complaining about the high prices.

That doesnt make sense to me.

Why? We don't like to pay high prices and we don't want to walk. How is that hard to understand?

As far as cars go, I already drive a small car that gets good gas mileage, and when it comes time for a new one (two years or so) I'll buy a hybrid. We also always try to live close to where we work, both to save time and gas money.

We've never built a house, but if we ever do I will pay close attention to how it is designed to take advantage of passive solar heating and lighting and wind cooling. I feel very strongly that a lot of the waste in terms of energy and everything else is due to our poorly designed buildings and cities. In short, there are no quick and simple fixes to this problem.

In addition, make for certain you have enough insulation.

You'll find a noticible difference

If you dont like high prices, then why have the treehuggers and many on the left blocked any attempt to drill anywhere in the US?
Why have the treehuggers and many on the left not allowed ANY type of oil exploration on any US territory?

While I agree that we need to find alternate forms of energy,in the short term we must find more domestic oil,to reduced our dependence on foreign sources.

So,if you want lower prices, then you should support domestic exploration and drilling.
You cant have it both ways.

Were like hamsters stuck on a wheel. We drive to work to buy gas. We buy gas to drive to work. Not much time for life.Who makes the money off of our work? Who makes the money off the gas?

The treehuggers never asked me if I like high prices, and even if I did, I doubt it would have any effect on their opinions about drilling in Alaska.

Sounds like a good topic for another thread. Maybe some treehuggers will show up and give you the answers.

Maybe.

Sure you can. There is more than one solution to this problem. First, it's not at all evident that drilling in Alaska would bring prices down. Second, if the prices do go down, even temporarily, because of new sources, then all incentive to find a long term solution will disappear. High prices keep the pressure on citizens and legislators and energy producers to find a better solution.

Your proposition is analagous to saying that if you don't like having athletes foot, you should support having your feet cut off. You can't complain about your feet itching without supporting efforts to cut them off.

We're allowed to talk about the negative effects of high gas prices on our lives. All day if we want to.

Wholesale gas markets jump
The market, which usually reacts first to futures market nervousness, jumped 10 - 25 cents a gallon.

August 29, 2005: 3:09 PM EDT

NEW YORK (CNN) - Wholesale prices for gasoline began to react Monday afternoon to Katrina's march through the Gulf of Mexico, jumping 10 to 25 cents per gallon over Friday's prices, depending on the part of the country, the publisher of the Lundberg Survey said.

"Unless these are reversed in the next few hours, they will show up in the street" -- at the retail level -- by Tuesday or Wednesday, predicted Trilby Lundberg.

The price hikes were confined to the unbranded wholesale market, which is typically the first to react to futures market nervousness, said Lundberg, whose survey tracks the prices of gasoline on the wholesale markets.

Refineries and oil-drilling platforms were in Katrina's path.

"The market believes tightness (of supplies) is substantial, at least temporarily," she said.

"Unless Katrina spares the oil facilities, then these wholesale prices will make their way to the street very, very fast, probably by tomorrow or the next day."

If, however, the damage is quickly deemed minimal, it's possible that the prices at the pumps would not be affected, she said.

On Sunday, the Lundberg Survey found that the national average price of gasoline broke a record for the fourth time this year, soaring nearly 13 cents between August 12 and August 26 to $2.63 per gallon of self-serve regular.

New Orleans drivers paid the least, at $2.45 per gallon of self-serve regular; and Chicago drivers paid the most, at $2.84, she said.

Since early January, gas prices have risen more than 83 cents per gallon.

Though gas prices are at a high in absolute terms, they are about 40 cents per gallon below their 1981 high with inflation factored in, she said. In 1981, unrest in Iran caused gas prices to shoot up.
