Dyslexia's thread on Venezuela from three years ago is a particularly good one, because Fbaezer comments on the political situation there at that time, and on Chavez. Fbaezer is a journalist in Mexico City, and easily our most knowledgable member on the subject of Latin America. I find it noteworthy that he made no connection between Chavez and terrorism. I take his word over that of those who think Freepers and Fox News have all the answers.

I wouldn't bet on it.

Apparently, Robertson has apologized. The evidence is on his web site, which I don't have the stomach to look for. But I read it in NY Times (those who don't trust the Times can seek this info from a medium they trust, maybe Drudge...)

On second thought:

well, he's certainly "clarified" (his word) his statement: he now says,

Quote:
We are in the midst of a war that is draining vast amounts of our treasure and is costing the blood of our armed forces. I am a person who believes in peace, but not peace at any price. However, I said before the war in Iraq began that the wisest course would be to wage war against Saddam Hussein, not the whole nation of Iraq. When faced with the threat of a comparable dictator in our own hemisphere, would it not be wiser to wage war against one person rather than finding ourselves down the road locked in a bitter struggle with a whole nation?

so instead of assassination, he just wants to wage war against Mr. Chavez, but not at any price.

"Wage war against the person" sounds remarkably like assassinate to me!!!

Waging war means you kill people, hoping you kill more of theirs than they get to kill of yours.

It spooks me how much of your loony religious right and neocons he speaks for.

He but enunciates without clever folderols what has been American foreign policy all too often, so we see the bare, naked bones.

BTW: I note that Venezuela is calling for legal action against Roberts:

""This public call to assassinate a head of state, considered a crime by all modern legislation, is prosecutable by its very nature. That is what the civilized world is expecting of U.S. authorities," the Venezuelan government said on Wednesday. "

Source: Reuters

Is that true? IS it illegal in the USA to call for the assassination of a foreign leader? Is it illegal to call for the assassination of your own leader/s?

I hardly think he speaks for many on the right. Most of the conservatives I know aren't even Christians so that counts against him being a speaker for them or me.

If he is a speaker for the right does that make Michael Moore a speaker for the left?

FYI, I believe this is not the first time Pat Robertson stated his belief about using assassination.

Good for you if your opinion is that Pat Robertson and his ideas about Chavez are irrelevant.

I don't know about the US, but incitement to murder anyone -- head of state or not -- would be a felony under German law. I would be surprised if it wasn't in the US, which is why I asked about it a few pages ago.

Good question.

However, irrelevant as he hopefully is to your leadership - one is forced to wonder, with a president so attuned to the christian right - and the loony likes of Robertson apparently having a following of quite a large number of less bright christians.

I am actually more concerned re his disgusting hate speech about gays, for instance - but, as a straw in the wind for the thinking of some elements of your society, a thing with this man's following seems worth noting.

It's only illegal for a government official to declare the assassination of a foreign leader, but citizens are free to express their opinion without legal repercussions.

I do believe that Congress once passed a Federal statute making it a crime to assassinate foreign heads of state, couldn't say if it were also criminal to incite to such acts. As i recall, it was due to the unseemly lust on the part of right wingnuts in Little Havana to see Fidel assassinated. I could go look it up, but i'm too lazy, i can't be arsed.

However, those who support Robertson aren't the brightest pennies in the piggy bank to begin with. Prosecuting him would make him a martyr. Let him walk around with his foot in his mouth, he's been doin' for years.

My brother and i once lived in the same house, and he moonlighted as the manager of a bar/pizza delivery shop. He came home late at night, and on weekends, we'd open a case of beer, and watch the 700 Club. Once, we called in to their prayer line, seeking help. My brother portrayed himself as a failed family man, wrestling with alcoholism and at the end of his rope. He was repeatedly asked for "a faith offering," told that checks would be accepted, and asked for a credit card number. Televangelism is a big business . . .

Link to Robertson

I don't know if anyone posted this already, but apparently Robertson has apologized for his remarks. Very strange to apologize for something that he says that he did not say.

What a nutjob! Rolling Eyes
