More facts about Australia:

'Protecting paradise'

In Perth, there's a family from the north of England who may help explain this uneasiness. They have everything they'd ever wanted: a big house and a successful business.

Australia recruits people it needs through skilled migration programmes

There are three pictures on the living room wall. Queen Elizabeth is flanked on one side by the legendary footballer George Best. On the other is a portrait of Pauline Hanson, the co-founder of the anti-immigration One Nation party, who in the late 1990s warned that Australia was in danger of being swamped by Asians.

There is a seemingly incompatible situation of a migrant family from England supporting a controversial anti-immigration politician.

Their reasons are simple enough - if unpalatable for many people. Here they are away from the gloom and the cold and they don't want anything or anyone to come in and spoil what they see as their slice of paradise.

They want the drawbridge raised - and the door firmly locked.

As the father explained, they had left Britain to "escape the blacks" and didn't want to have to move again.

Such attitudes are not uncommon here...

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make here, Lash, having come to this thread rather late.
Every developed country has a policy about economic migration.

If anybody has a real concern, rather than a fake narcissistic hysteria, we are very happy to point you to places where you can lodge a protest against Howard's appalling refugee policies.

It is a pity that Lash's cyclic outbursts of psychodrama obscure the genuine efforts of many of us to effect change in the appalling policies of Oz's current right wing oligarchy.

Many of us post constantly re this, and are genuinely engaged in the battle against the right's racist policies.

I,as well as the rest of the Oz contingent, am very happy to help anyone who cares, as opposed to hysterical outbursts of unbalanced and hysterical hatred, to make their views felt.

Lash has labelled herself as wishing only to carry on, despite invitations to be more genuine.

This is sad.

International pressure is welcomed by most decent Ozzians, just as we hope to apply international pressure to the more disgusting policies of the current US administration.

Bizarre, that one of our more right-wing posters should pretend to criticise right-wing policy in another country.

Not sure if Lash is aware of anything outside America unless it supports her prejudices.

Oy! Who cares.

We are taking the fight right up to them!!!!

Uberright Americans are of no moment.

Although, If the Bushies commented, it might mean something.

But, of course, they don't.

All they care about is that they get some support from other countries, no matter the policies of the smeggers they snuggle up to.

Kinda reminds you of American support of Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein, no?

Aaaah go smeg yerself.

I don't "fight" anyone who has a genuine argument to make, and who actually cares a good goddamn about what it claims outrage about.

When it is all about hysterical nonsense, than I lampoon for all I am worth.

Do YOU want to contribute to the solution, Thomas?

Oz racism.

Lash has it wrong, of course.

She is on about the immigration policy of 40 years ago.

The actual problem is the current right's policy re asylum seekers who arrive illegally.

That IS a disgusting problem.

And the Bush poodle's (Howard's) roll back of Aboriginal rights re Mabo and Wik....but I doubt she has bothered to find any actual facts re any of this, it would go against her ignorant polemic.

Sigh....if only there was some knowledge behind this psychodrama.....

Well there is your dismal failure in the 18th century, when you didn't ship nearly enough slaves to Australia to ensure adequate diversity today. You have to admit Georgia did a much better job at that.

As for contemporary migration policy, it seems that Australia's net immigration rate is actually higher than the United States. This is according to Lash's own source, the CIA World Factbook

Lol! well, yes, that is prolly why she expects to find generations of Africans in Oz, as opposed to the current immigrants. But, I never expect facts to sway the rhetoric.

It is very sad, actually. The Howard government, assisted by idiots like Hanson and her ilk, have destroyed decades of careful progressive building.

These are matters that we ozzians here take extremely seriously, as can be seen from the threads about the issues that are longstanding and often posted to,here on A2k.

It demeans the seriousness of the matters to see how Lash trifles with them in these outbursts.

We would welcome her contributions if there was a skerrick of meaningful intent behind them. That there is not is proven by her refusal either to look at the facts contained in so many threads here, and her lack of interest in aught but rhetoric, as opposed to taking up invitations to meaningful action.

Sigh.

It is delusion to believe that any ozzians here will object to factual dealing with the current realities, as some right wing Americans, such as her, object to factual dealings with faults in their foreign policy.

Oh well, many Americans here DO have a genuine interest in matters outside of a blinkered and chauvinistic purview.

They are why so many non Americans are here, whether welcomed by the more benighted natives or not.

And these less benighted Americans are the majority of Americans here.

Maybe that is why the right consider this a "liberal" (gag) site?
