@Smileyrius,
Quote:
1) So was Jesus speaking in parable, or was he using these characters to describe a real life event?

Jesus always taught to the heart, which is why he used parables, they discern the heart of the listener. (Matthew 13:10-17) The stories carried a meaning while not being obvious even to the "wise man". Neither the rich man nor lazarus were real, poverty was not being done away with nor riches being condemned, nor was hades used as a location, for it is the common grave of the righteous and the unrighteous, when the apostle paul quoted the old testament, he used the word Hades to translate She'ol (compare Acts 2:27 and the original citation in Psalms 16:10.)
The “rich man” represented the Pharisees. (Luke 16:14.) The beggar Lazarus represented the common Jewish people who were despised by the Pharisees but became followers of Jesus. (Luke 18:11; John 7:49; Matthew 21:31, 32.) Their deaths were also symbolic, representing a change in circumstances. Thus, the formerly despised ones came into a position of divine favor i.e the bosom position of Abraham, and the formerly seemingly favored ones were rejected by God, while being tormented by the judgment messages delivered by the ones whom they had despised.—Acts 5:33; 7:54.

Quote:
2)Can a dead man speak to Abraham?

No, the dead are sleeping and conscious of nothing, so it would be silly if they could talk while unconscious, Jesus even suggested that they would be asleep until the hour that is coming in which they hear his voice and rise up again. (ecclesiastes 9:5, John 5:21, 28, 29)

Quote:
3)Can fire harm the dead?

No, fire is used in parables mostly to denote destruction, refinement or light. examined below

Quote:
4)Why do you suppose that the rich man did not ask for the fire to be quenched? a dip of the finger is not going to help a man engulfed in flames
Because water cannot quench this fire, he was asking for the messages of judgement to be watered down, they were in essence being tormented by the message of the righteous ones, which were putting them to shame.

Quote:
5)Is this real fire or is it symbolic?

Fire was used in Bible times as the most thorough means of destruction. Hence, Jesus used fire to illustrate the complete destruction of the wicked.—Matthew 13:40-42, 49, 50
Fire is also used in reference to a refiner’s fire, a fire used in purifying gold and silver (Malachi 3:1-3) A test by fire also reveals the quality of a material, as pointed out by the apostle Paul when emphasizing the importance of building on Jesus Christ with fire-resistant materials.—1Corinthians 3:10-15. The fire in the parable was representative of the refining via the judgment messages delivered by Jesus followers

Essentially the parable has nothing to do with a putative hellfire or the condition of the dead, it is an illustration told to show that those who are favored by the world, are by no means favored by God, nor are those poor in worldly means poor toward God. more specifically applicable to the religious leaders of their day. (Matthew 6:19-21)

Luke 6:43-45

6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;
7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy-- meditate on these things.
9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.
(NKJ)
We dont know where thoughts come from. But the Holy Spirit does, and He is given to us to warn us when the devil is in our minds trying to deceive us with deceptive words. The Holy Spirit is our guaranteed message from God and He only quotes verses. Now He will only quote new testament verses until you are strong enough to handle going back into the old testament. The Holy Spirit searches the hearts of all spirits. But if we dont have enough verses written in our conscience(book of beliefs) so that He can pick out the best one, He will use the ones He has. Dont be deceived even if you get a part of a verse go look it up so you dont miss the principle. Every verse is a spiritual principle just like our alphabet the verses are the Holy Spirits alphabet. The Holy Spirit knows what the intents are of other spirits, and He will warn us with a verse.

Rom 8:27
27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

EVIL HEART
Acts 8:17-22
17 Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
18 And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money,
19 saying, "Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit."
20 But Peter said to him, "Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money!
21 "You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your heart is not right in the sight of God.
22 "Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you.

I Jn 3:21
21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God.

@Squeakybro,
That is an awfully drawn out way of saying you disagree Smile

The good news my friend, is that I have studied and continue to study all 66 cannonised books of the bible, so the holy spirit has a lot to work with. I always share my understanding with the caveat that I might well be wrong, I am a student first, and a teacher second, but if you believe me wrong, show me where and I am happy to examine it.

on a side note,,, are your quoted scriptures exactly as quoted you by the holy spirit?

@extra medium,
What's the use? If people in heaven have free will, it's human nature to 'sin.'

I wonder how my cycles of heaven and hell there will be?

How long does anyone wish to live? I'm not sure eternal life can be that interesting or rewarding. Do they have work in heaven? How does one make a living, and do all the homes look the same? Or does it depend on earthly wealth? Do they produce goods and services in heaven? If not, what will the people do with their 'free' time?

@cicerone imposter,
'Morning, CI. Thanks for dropping in.
Let me remind you that the soul is not immortal and that everlasting life is a gift. The majority of those permitted everlasting life will be right here on earth.

So, how much more time would you like to have for your world travels? Are there places you would like to see again? How many of your ancestors would you care to meet and converse with, share meals with?
I can't imagine one with your interests to ever be bored. The only thing lacking is whether you want it enough to search for it.

@Smileyrius,

John 10:7-9
7 Then Jesus said to them again, "Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.
8 "All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them.
9 "I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.
(NKJ)

Jesus said that All who ever came before Him are thieves and robbers. You don't believe Jesus. I do. And because satan quotes old testament how would one know if it was the Holy Spirit or satan quoting to them. Satan doesn't quote new testament because he would be glorifying Christ and his kingdom would be divided.
And yes when the Holy Spirit speaks to me He quotes the verses word for word as a whole verse. He does not quote chapter and verse number. Because that isn't part of the Word of God. I have to go look them up to show chapter and verse so that people can check what I say.

@neologist,
"Soul" is an idea without much basis in fact based on religious belief. There is soul and there is soul.

Quote:
soul
sōl/Submit
noun
1. the spiritual or immaterial part of a human being or animal, regarded as immortal.
emotional or intellectual energy or intensity, especially as revealed in a work of art or an artistic performance.
"their interpretation lacked soul"
synonyms: inspiration, feeling, emotion, passion, animation, intensity, fervor, ardor, enthusiasm, warmth, energy, vitality, spirit
"their music lacked soul"
2. the essence or embodiment of a specified quality.

There's no way to prove that the spiritual soul exists. It's similar to belief in god(s); nobody can produce evidence that 'it' exists.

@cicerone imposter,
Yes, but the scriptural words translated as souls encompass the entirety of our being. Hence, animals are referred to as souls.
When Adam was created, the bible explains that he "came to be a living soul" (Genesis 2:7)

@neologist,
Well if you can read your bible there isn't any reference of satan quoting new testament. Satan does quote old testament, and Jesus counters it with new testament.

Matt 12:25-28
25 But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them: "Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.
26 "If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand?
27 "And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges.
28 "But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you.

By your reasoning alone, (not that Im sure where you get the idea from) you render your own argument void. most of my verses were from the Christian Greek scriptures, so it COULDN'T be Satan speaking right?

Unless you know more than I, the Devil also only speaks the one time in the new testament, and that occurred before a word of the new testament was written. Perhaps I am missing something?

The reason I asked if you quoted the holy spirit word for word, was that it interested me that when the holy spirit quotes this scripture to you, he uses the word "saints", when the Greek word used which is Hagios means according to Strongs,
Quote:
set apart by (or for) God, holy, sacred.

I had always considered the input of "Saints" to be a Catholic bias in the translation, and you don't strike me as the Catholic type(?)
