and thus closes sea adventures of the farmer people for 2017.
I have a bruised leg and a busted toe from this years deck injuries. Im amazed I even have any toes left. Walking on heavy swaying decks is a skill requiring careful attention. In running seas, we always must keep both feet somewhat attached to the floor , its a " deckside shuffle" skill that must be acquired otherwise one will break bones as a floor drives toward you or quickly pulls away.My problems always involve scooting around the pilot house going forward or aft I always slam a toe into "hard parts" like stainless railing mounts or an iron clevis tightened up on a tie down.

@farmerman,
Couldn't you just stay home and go in the barn to be beat up by cricket bats every day?

@Ragman,
Im not really hurt and out of the workforce. Ive suffered broken toes several and several more times in my life. The big toe s th rel bugger. He demands a change of pace in ones perambulation. "Shuffle dont run". Even driving is affected when the big guy is disabled.

Popping up to say this thread is pretty enjoyable. Made me want to rummage around for my copy of Moby Dick. I like farmer’s seafaring technical talk.

@farmerman,
My legs are getting so weak, I started using a cane today. I noticed it yesterday when I tried to step down from a curb, and I fell to the ground, because my legs were too weak to keep me standing.

@cicerone imposter,
Ask your doctor to send you for physical therapy, it can do a great deal of good to strengthen your legs. As we get older, balance and leg strength needs some fine tuning. In June 2016 I had pneumonia and it knocked me for a loop, I was so weak I couldn't do much of anything. I did a little rehab for my legs to build up some strength. Good luck with that CI, take care of yourself.

@glitterbag,
when I came out of my last surgery I was knocked back a bot and noticed my legs were weakened and my center-of-gravity in motion was difficult to maintain. So I used crutches for about a week and Im still slowly coming out of it. Im walking each morning and I wear a Fitbit. My C-O-G i slowly resolving itself. Have you changed any medications?

As glitterbag said, slowly and with medical oversight. Keep up your nutrition.

@farmerman,
It's easy to forget about nutrition (which almost sounds crazy) (especially since all of us love food) but during and for months after pneumonia I barely had any appetite. Not eating made me weaker and weaker, until it dawned on me I needed something so r. G'bag got some Ensure. I couldn't always finish a can but it did make me more alert and less likely to sleep all day. I lost a ton of weight but fortunately gained back about half.

I am very concerned about CI, because of the leg weakness, our bones are not what they used to be and falling can be a huge setback. I hope he's online and follows up with his doctor. My friend's Mom was 96 and used some physical therapy to help her with her balance. The good news was that she didn't have any more falling incidents, however about 6 months later she succumbed to a stroke. None of us will last forever, but I don't wish to be a shut in voluntarily.

@glitterbag,
more people succumb to head injuries when they fall and suffer concussions or even intracranial bleeding. I see that some old engineers have invented a head gear that uses accelerometers to tell if your falling and then the head gear inflates like a b ball and saves your getting a severe hed injury.

kinda like an air bag for walking or jogging

@glitterbag,
Thanks for your concern, but I try to be very careful when I walk outside, and I take my cane with me. If need be, I have a stroller to take with us (my wife drives all the time now). I have a temporary handicap sign, but I'm going to ask my doc the next time I see her for a permanent one with my legs so weak.

@cicerone imposter,
This is one net sailboat, were about 3 miles offshore and mrs F is reading and we (the guys) must serve as "pit crew" if we need to tack, So far winds are good but the weather is supposed to get nasty so were heading down Bay to the area near the end of Delmarva. Im gonna dead reckoning to compare to the sat nav and gps.

@farmerman,
made it all the way out of cape Chas and up to the shoals along the inner Del coast, offshore at the plce here windfarms are being planned. We took ome movies of the views to NJ and Del/Md shores. Saw lotsa minke whales heading North and pelican were all over us during the hot days.
It wa a nice trip , two really hot days and everything else was like the "roaring 40's"
