Should DeLay resign

Thr reason DeLay is not Speaker of the House is that Republicans have learned from Newt Gingrich.

Gingrich was considered somewhat radical, but he was the most visible figure behind the Contract With America and so got played up when the Republicans took over the House adn Senate in 1994. I believe it ws either Time or Newsweek which showed a picture of a victorious Gingrich on the cover, and the headline: The Irrelevant President, referring to Clinton. Gingrich's statements and arrogance got him in trouble, and he eventually had to go.

The Republicans learned from that lesson, and this time put the far more likable Dennis Hastert as Speaker. The real leader of the House, though, is the radical, arrogant DeLay. The Republicans are just keeping him out of the limelight, to avoid a Gingrich rerun.

Actually, compared to DeLay, Gingrich is pretty moderate. When they got rid of Gingrich and substituted DeLay, they really went over to the extreme.

Now for some real irony:

DeLay: To Serve Well is to Serve Humbly; Asks for Prayers for Congress on National Day of Prayer Thu May 5, 5:32 PM ET

WASHINGTON, May 5 /U.S. Newswire/ -- House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas) today delivered remarks on the importance of humility in public service and asked for continued prayers for the U.S. Congress at the annual National Day of Prayer service. Below are excerpts from his remarks.

"No man or woman of any faith or of no faith can truly love, truly serve, truly persevere, truly dare mighty deeds, truly hope for the future or truly honor the past, without a humble heart.

"So it is for humility, then, that, on behalf of the legislative branch -- both houses, both parties -- I ask for your prayers today. Because the only way we can serve well is to serve humbly, as servants both to God and our nation.

"For all the troubles in our world today, we can never forget that humanity has never before possessed a greater capacity for virtue than at this moment. (Uh, Yeah. You might check that 2X4 in your own eye!)

With a richer, healthier, and more populous planet than at any time in history, mankind has never been blessed with a greater garden, nor with greater means of protecting it. (Thank God for Bombs!)

"And while all these gifts carry with them unprecedented temptations toward pride, so do they carry unprecedented opportunities for humble service - here in Congress, across America, and around the world in the hearts of all people of all faiths.

"Here in Washington, the seat of the most powerful nation in history, these days pose unique challenges and offer unique opportunities. For however dangerous, these days we live are the envy of all times and men.

"Think of what we could accomplish if we checked our pride at the door, if collectively we all spent less time taking credit and more time deserving it. If we spent less time ducking responsibility and more time welcoming it. (HELLO!!!) If we spent less time on our soapboxes and more time on our knees.

"No matter what your faith, no matter what your political persuasion, your prayers for our increased humility, for our ever-humbler service to God and neighbor are needed and wanted."

Chopping Off the Weakest Branch

Quote:

By RON CHERNOW
Published: May 6, 2005
LEADING evangelical conservatives are taking on the federal judiciary, which they see as hostile to religion, and they have much more in mind than simply putting an end to Senate filibusters against judicial nominees. Some have now proposed that Congress cut off federal financing for judges and even abolish some lower-level courts that they feel have issued decisions that mandate a secular, anti-Christian state. "We set up the courts," said the House majority leader, Tom DeLay, a key ally of the evangelicals. "We can unset the courts. We have the power of the purse."

Some religious political leaders are fond of invoking the nation's founders as kindred spirits. But those founders - a notably fiery, opinionated bunch - seldom spoke with one voice on any issue, especially when it came to the federal judiciary. How Thomas Jefferson or Alexander Hamilton would have felt about Senate filibusters against judicial nominees we can only speculate, as the filibuster wasn't introduced until 1825.

But as for denying money to or dismantling courts, historians can speak with far greater authority. This is because we are witnessing a re-enactment of a historic drama that unfolded two centuries ago,

In no fear the advice will be understood, let alone heeded, I offer that the mindset behind such pronouncements is of more service to The Republican Cause than is any effort undertaken by The Republicans themselves.

It's not a case of the Democrats wising up in their positions, it is that for the past decade or so, pretty much the entire AM radio band is an extension of the Republican National Committee.

You have to be naive not to notice that the Republican takeover of things started just a few years after the AM dial went GOP in a big way. These two phenomena are clearly related.

Let's face it. Not too many people spend a lot of time thinking thier positions out on political issues. They deal with impressions, what the guys on the job said, etc. Fill the AM radio dial with motormouths giving all the news a well-worked out spin, and they are bound to tip the balance in the conservatives' favor.

This accounts for such incredible phenomena, for instance, as people maintaining, with a straight face, that they cannot get over the fact that a past President lied to them about a little hanky panky seven years ago, but they are not concerned that the present President lied to them about the reason for going to war.

Only a slow, constantly repititive process over the course of years can result in mass insanity. Very Happy

There's that mindset thing again - The Democrats as Inocent Victims, The Republicans as Evil Incarnate. Instead of manufacturing excuses for their electoral fortunes, The Democrats should be looking for, and addressing, the internal, institutional reasons for their decline. The reason Conservative Talk Radio succeeds is that it has a market - it didn't create that market, it simply found itself welcomed and supported by that market. The reason mainstream liberal press circulation and mainstream liberal media news ratings are declining is that they serve a declining market. Increasingly more folks just don't care to hear what The Democrats have to say, and The Democrats have no one but themselves to blame for that.

And just a heads up - DeLay headlines haven't much longer to run; the next sleaze wave is set to break in a very different direction. We're gonna be hearin' lots more about stuff surrounding The Junior Senator from New York here real quick, and it ain't gonna be pretty.

Ahhh, the God Squad has picked a new topic?

With any luck, Delay believes in God, and is fearing his eventual wrath. I kinda like it when his sort is A Believer.

Rush Limbaugh spent years perfecting his schtick, hitting just the right notes to excite his conservative audience. The liberals have only recently even begun to try to come up with an answer. They probably will not be able to just copy the methods and styles of the conservative hosts.

People who vote Democratic and people who vote Republican often have different personalities, and tend to have different kinds of humor. So the liberals have to try to find the style which works for them-while the Republicans have been at this since the 1980's.

The simple fact is that the conservative and liberal sides were fairly evenly balanced, with a slight advantage for the Democrats, for a long time until the AM radio went conservative. Then, the capturing of just a small percentage of the voters yielded big changes in the House and Senate-remember, you only have to win a House or Senate race by one vote to get the seat.

You only have to have a majority of one Congressman or one Senator to ensure that EVERY committee has the majority party in the majority, and that every chairman is from the majority party. One vote, and all the committees are controlled by one party.

So a shift of just a few percentage points makes a big difference in the government, and you have to be naive indeed to think that having the entire AM band an extensionof the Republican National Committee can't shift a few percentage points over to the GOP side.

Ahh, the myth of the "mainstream liberal press". This is the favorite excuse of the conservatives to explain away the excesses of talk radio maniacs.

What "liberal press"is that? Is that the "liberal press" which allowed a president to whip up support for the Iraq invasion on account of WMD's which weren't there-and never checked out the story to debunk it?

What "mainstream liberal press"? What a laugh.

You expressed almost everything I have been thinking, kelticwizard.

But, the Republicans have been using the same tricks for longer than 20 years. Do you remember Pat Nixon's Republican cloth coat? No one complained about Nancy Reagan's full length minks.

My advice to the Dems - to "wise up" - is simple; abandon denial. Wishing a thing so doesn't make it so, refusing to acknowledge an elephant doesn't make the elephant go away.

And just to clarify my reference to "mainstream liberal" press and media, I point to the likes of The NY Times, the Washington Post, and The Los Angeles Times, and to the "Big 3" TV network news organizations in particular. Not all press or media is mainstream, not all is liberal. Those cited, however, certainly qualify. I don't recall any of them being gung-ho about anything concerning The Bush Administration - apart, perhaps, from a few weeks following 9/11, and then grudgingly if at all ... least of all the ramp-up to the recent Iraq intervention. In fact, as I recall here just a while back, the cited were all but handing The Presidency to The Democrats - whichever Democrat happened to be in the headlines at the moment.

White Water was as much of a sham as Joe McCarthy's lists.

Clinton was not impeached because of White Water. He was impeached because of Monica Lewinsky.

Do you think that Tom DeLay spent all that time in hot tubs because the warm water helped his ingrown hair? I think DeLay has his own Monica but her skin is wrinkled from the hot water she shared with him.

Would you agree, ehBeth, that the shades of gray depend on whether you are the one wearing the garment? I think that DeLay is wearing charcoal gray but there are some posters here who scream he is wearing white.
