I saw a program on Fox News, on the ABC tonight. Shame on Rupert Murdoch, that's all I can say. He was never quite so blatant in Oz, although he liked throwing his weight around. Fox News has to be an all time low.

I agree - he isn't.

That is why I am still carrying on about Fox - at its worst, I imagined it like the Channel 9 news, only a bit worse - but in reality it is abysmal.

Well that's a relief, McG. I already had you sitting in the corner with a little dunce hat on your head.

And sorry to be so uninformed about rock bands. I'm a flower child. Still listening to Joe Cocker and Leon Russell.

Still I can't agree with you that Rush (rock band or not) is the best thing to come out of Canada. I've seen better.

If that premise is correct...that the US has generally - in toto - moved further right, and that this movement is mainly unique to the US, then that is a very interesting phenomenon.

Interesting perhaps, but hardly unique. Recent elections in a number of nations have been less than satisfying for those of leftward bent.
As to whether FOX et al might be causal, the premise is ridiculous. A market exists only where and insofar as there is demand for that market; markets do not create themselves.

The mere existence of media which does not toe the "liberal line" is viewed by some as inimical. That such media might find itself successful in the marketplace even more horrifies and outrages some. The absurdity of their discontent is entirely lost upon such.

Precisely. If the shoe pinches, why try to force it on? Should one prefer not to encounter viewpoint divergent from one's own, one need merely avoid the source of the troubling viewpoint.

Well, even if this is true, timber: our center-right conservatives are mostly as 'left' as the Democrats, while the Republicans represent an ideology of the (far) right here. (And that would be similar to most European countries: remember that France is always called 'liberal' - with it's conservative government and conservative president . ["Of course", this is generally fogotten, when speaking about the Socialists, who govern the UK Laughing ])

Good night Timber. We're not talking about divergent viewpoints. We're talking about Republican controlled media. And I do believe you know this. Why do you play so dumb sometimes? <exasperation>

First, Lola, I reject the premise it is "Republican Controlled"; it is "Market Controlled". If the market chooses to reward FOX, so be it. If the market chooses to reward Air America, so be it. I don't notice anyone from your camp upset that Air America exists or presses an agenda - why might that be? Just an FYI - over the past few months, another of the Left's favorite boogeymen, ClearChannel, has been chiefly instrumental in providing outlets for Air America programming. Without the support from ClearChannel, it is highly likely Air America would long since have succumbed to its financial woes. Haven't seen anyone from your camp thank ClearChannel for helpin' to keep Air America afloat. Why might that be?

Second, why would it possibly matter, in a free and competitive market, functioning in a free and open society, if any one or another entity might influence or even control any one or even any assortment of the hundreds if not thousands of available media outlets?

As I said, I find it amusing some folks object to the very existence of a forum for a point of view not congruent with their own preferences - or perhaps more accurately put, their own prejudices.

I don't think anyone has a problem with Fox being on the air, If people choose to watch it that's their choice. What most people have a problem with is it being labeled as "News" and "Fair and Balanced" when it obviously isn't.

Kinda like if "Debbie Does Dallas" were labeled as educational material, yeah one could become more educated by watching it, but lets face it, that's not what the producers had in mind while making the film.

You're trying to compare Air America and Fox.....oh really Timber now I'm really laughing. Pllllllllllease. You want to compare a small radio station to a giant TV network. A network with thousands of tenacles, sunk deep within the Republican led government of the moment. That's a true David and Goliath story.

I know those Clear Channel folks and believe me, they are out for themselves. Someday I'll tell you a nice story about it. I'm sure they have some self interested reason for helping Air America.

Have you ever heard the word monopoly, Timber? (metaphorically speaking, of course). We have anti-trust laws for the very reason that it's possible for an uncontrolled market to ruin capitalism for us all. We need to go back to regulation of the media or Rupert Murdoch, Tom Hicks and others will ruin democracy too.

I'm working on something important today, or I would go on.

Probably because they are more about revealing the TRUTH, which is a concept neocons don't really understand. Besides, they'd rather create their own reality in order to keep their minions in line...

Maybe it just caught my attention because you mentioned a porn movie, but this makes a lot of sense to me.

Indeed FOX and Air America - and the nascent Gore/Hyatt cable/satellite TV enterprise, INdTV, are fully comparable in every respect other than the market success enjoyed by FOX. It remains to be seen what will come of Gore's latest gambit.

And, yes, Lola, I'm familiar with the concept of monopoly, and I'm pleased to see the beginning of the crumbling of the Democratic Party's 70-plus-year monopoly of American politico-economics.

Absolutely phenomenal, really...

This is the new alternative reality. It is being created by the neoconservative's grasp on the corporate media monopoly. Don't think. Don't question the motive's of an administration smothered in secrecy, lies, and bullshit. Just fall in line.

And did ya ever think it'd happen in this country? I certainly didn't...
