Horowitz is doing much more than expressing an opinion. He'is a missionary, sent from on high to tell college students how to think and with whom to associate. That's fine. You see what kind of response he's getting.

And it is interesting that it is the self-professed champions of tolerance and free speech on the left who seem to think throwing pies at speakers is okay. And those of us who think it is not okay are simply way too uptight? Okay. The more this thread goes, the more convinced I am that the thesis is right on.

What, a little pie in the face is going to stop Horowitz from talking.....I don't think so. But it is an appropriate message and it's about time.

I'm quite sure a pie in the face is effective to stifle free speech just about anywhere including on a college campus. And for sure any who do not wish to be exposed to or allow any opposing points of view will continue to think this form of denial of speech is just fine. And you probably have no concept or understanding at all why some of us find such methods not only offensive and illegal but completely stifling to complete education having any opportunity to happen.

Here's a little bit of history on Horowitz:

Quote:
David Horowitz

David Horowitz represents one of the right's favorite kinds of people: lapsed leftists (See Marvin Olasky).

He is the president and founder of the Center for the Study of Popular Culture (CSPC), which is a well-funded ($350,000 + from the Bradley foundation alone in 1998) launching pad for his and others attacks against supposed liberals, the supposedly liberal media, and public television in particular.

From his perch at the CSPC, Horowitz frequently appears on TV and radio to denounce the left and attack it for various "falsehoods."

Horowitz's holds a bachelor's degree from Columbia University (1959) and a Master's degree from the University of California, Berkeley (1961).

Shortly after graduating from Berkeley Horowitz became a leader of what was called the " New Left " movement, editing the influential left wing magazine Ramparts.

Horowitz's big career move came in the 1980s, when he and his partner Peter Collier reversed their ideological perspective, coalescing in their 1989 book, "Destructive Generation: Second Thoughts about the Sixties."

Collier and Horowitz also created a project of the CSPC called the Committee on Media Integrity (COMINT), designed specifically to attack Public Television. People for the American Way (PFAW) has reported that:

While Horowitz claims he does no direct lobbying, he takes credit for legislative attacks on PBS: "Probably Senator Dole and I are the two individuals that had the most to do with the present hold" [on reauthorization of PBS funding].

Buying a Movement, PFAW
PFAW has also reported that more than 50 percent of the CSPC's budget in 1992 came from three foundations: Olin, Bradley and Sarah Scaife (joint contributions totaling $482,500). COMINT itself was begun with $125,000 in start-up funds from the Sarah Scaife Foundation in 1988.

Grants to the CSPC.

Grants to the National Forum Foundation. Horowitz and Collier first received money (at least $825,000 -- money you wouldn't see as going to Collier and Horowitz were you to just search for grants to the CSPC) from the right wing movement through the NFF.

David Horowitz is no stranger to protest methods. He invented many of them himself. So I doubt he'll be discouraged by a little pie in his face.

In other words, if you don't like what she has to say, it is an appropriate response to try and shut her up by hitting her with a pie? You advocate a violent response, but call it "nonviolent," or "all in good fun."

Yup. Liberals are to be applauded for exercising their freedom of speech. Everybody else can be disrespected and assaulted with pies.

Foxy, perhaps you didn't know that freedom of speech means "I should be allowed to say what I think, because I'm right."

LOL, isn't that what I said, Brandon? And some here still don't understand that a mindset and climate that approves throwing pies at invited guests who say something the liberals don't agree with is not a climate that attracts educators with views they don't agree with either. And these same people believe they are getting a balanced, complete education. There must be some scientific term for this phenomenon.

Our former liberal Prime Minister wasn't put off from making his speeches by some pie in the face. Neither have any of the premiers who've been pied over the decades. Maybe Canadians are just made of tougher fibre.

Pie-ing to the left, pie-ing to the right.

We've got equal opportunity pie-ers up here.

My goodness...you people may be beyond hope.

At the fall fair in my home town, you could pay a dollar and chuck a cream pie at the mayor or an alderman. In the private religious school where my ex-wife taught for a decade, each summer they'd have an outdoor event where the kids and teachers would have a cream pie fight.

And foxfyre...you really should stop with the promulgation of statements that are, effectively, lies. It's unseemly in the righteous. "throw pies at invited guests who say something liberals don't like" Bethie and I have both just lauded the pies tossed at the Liberal Prime Minister. We are completely bi-pietisan.

First of all the people at the fair agreed to have pies thrown at them and the speakers at schools did not. You are speaking about apples and oranges.

It's fine that you don't mind pies being thrown at people, but that doesn't mean others have to like it. It's a difference of opinion. I know if it were I, I would want those little fascist bastards thrown in jail.

Have there been any? If there has been then I suggest they get thrown in jail as well.

I make the point of magnitude. Tico earlier brought up the notion that this act is a crime. As if that settles very much at all. So is speeding. We'll assume Tico has been guilty of this. Perhaps fudging on his tax return. We'll assume you have rolled through a stop sign on some dark and abandoned road once or twice. So let's toss you and Tico in jail too, you fascist bastards. Either of you ever slugged someone? Of course, a ceam pie is way way more injurious than a driven fist.

Conservatives don't throw pies.

They just vote, and go back to work.

The liberals must have too much spare time. Maybe they should use all that leisure to come up with a reason to exist, or something.

Ya figure? Three pie targets:

- A Liberal Prime Minister
- San Franciso mayor Gavin Newsom
- Sierra Club president

Hilarious! Just found an incident where Coulter got a pie and she referred to it as "an act of terrorism was committed against me".
