mm, The lack of past terrorist attack on US soil doesn't imply we are safe from terrorism. Maybe, you didn't know that. As the 9-11 Commission has stated, this administration is rife with failing grades concerning our "security."

You must learn to get your head out of the sand. That's not security.

WWIII

This is World War Three. Terrorism knows no borders. It festers as surely in the heartland of America as it does in the mountains of Afghanistan, the plains of Iraq, or the slums of Ireland. If we have true resolve, as opposed to mere lofty rhetoric, these are the places the war must be fought. It is a new type of war, and it will be fought with technologic, economic, diplomatic and military weapons never before wielded. Don't fool yourselves into believing it will be clean, painless, and soon over. On this venture hangs the future of civilization; as surely as the struggles of the previous century freed civilization from the tyrannies of The Third Reich, The Chrysanthemum Throne, and The Soviet Union, this struggle must free civilization from the tyranny of terrorism. Pray to whatever your diety may be to grant us the strength and the will to prevail.

I'm glad you recognize that, c.i.

After all, that underlines the vital need for stepped up intelligence gathering programs for counter-terrorism purposes.

I was not implying that at all,and I'm sorry you thought I was.

I was trying to show that domestic spying has its uses.

For example...

Al-Qaeda Immigrant Admits Plotting to Destroy Brooklyn Bridge
NewsMax.com Wires and NewsMax.com
Thursday, June 19, 2003
WASHINGTON - An immigrant from Kashmir has admitted being a member of al-Qaeda and pleaded guilty to providing aid to terrorists, Attorney General John Ashcroft said today.
Ashcroft said that truck driver Iyman Faris pleaded guilty to plotting against the United States, including taking part in a plot to blow up the Brooklyn Bridge. An indictment said Faris worked closely with Khalid Shaikh Mohammad, a top officer in the Muslim terrorist group who was captured earlier this year.

Ashcroft said Faris, also known as Mohammed Rauf, tried to obtain "gas cutters" and other tools that could be used to damage train tracks to cause derailments. He studied ultralight aircraft for use in a possible attack and suggested driving a truck loaded with explosives onto an airport tarmac to blow up planes.

Under an agreement unsealed today, Faris pleaded guilty to providing material support to terrorists and conspiracy to provide support. He agreed to cooperate with investigators. He faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and fines of up to $500,000 on both counts at a sentencing hearing Aug. 1.

"This case highlights the very real threats that still exist here at home in the United States of America in the war against terrorism. This case has many of the hallmarks we have come to recognize in al-Qaeda operations," Ashcroft said.

"We have taken another American-based al-Qaeda operative off the streets, who appeared to be a hard-working American trucker, but secretly scouted terrorist strikes that could have killed many of his fellow citizens."

Farris, a longtime resident of Columbus, Ohio, obtained U.S. citizenship in 1999....

Now,how would the govt have known about this without spying on a US citizen?
Is it your contention that since the spying on Americans is illegal (you believe) that this man should be released?

How about these guys, who were captured by NYPD?

http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/Northeast/08/28/ny.bombplot/index.html

Or this guy, also caught by a domestic spying operation...

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2004-06-14-ohio-mall_x.htm

Should all of these people be released?

I believe most Americans do not have any problem with this administration's wiretaps on al Qaeda or terrorist organization members.

What Americans will not tolerate is this administration's self-proclaimed authorization for wiretaps against American citizens without court authority. It's called "checks and balances" of power. Congress established the means by which any president can request wiretaps against American citizens - before or after the fact. There is no excuse for Bushco to ignore the process established by congress.

Most Americans are not willing to forego our Constitutional and Bill of Rights on the whims of this president - or any other president.

Wiretaps, torture, and other activities illegal, immoral and un-American:

Leading article: Half-truths that cloak a lawless world of depravity

Published: 28 December 2005
At times, and these are growing more frequent, we catch a glimpse of a twilight world that seems to exist alongside our own. The world we are encouraged to believe we live in is one of sunny uplands and blue skies. It is a world governed by laws, where order prevails and politicians pledge themselves to uphold civilised values. It is one where abductions, beatings and torture are always on the wrong side of the law.

In the parallel world, things are arranged differently. Here, people are plucked off the street, held incommunicado and transported thousands of miles for questioning. It is a world of unrecorded flights in private planes that have nothing, but also everything, to do with governments. It is a world of intelligence agents who may or may not be government employees; a world where the only law is an ill-defined and ever-changing duty to ensure national security.

3 March
Former Yugoslavia
Terrorists exploded a small bomb, probably a handgrenade, in front of the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade, causing minor damage but no casualties.

15 April
Kuwait
Kuwaiti authorities arrested seventeen persons as they attempted to infiltrate Kuwait from Iraq. An additional person was arrested later, and a large car bomb and weapons were recovered. The group stands charged with being part of an Iraqi government plot to assassinate former President Bush while he was visiting Kuwait.

1 July
Japan
A few days before President Clinton's arrival at the base prior to the Group of Seven summit in Tokyo, terrorists fired two home-made rockets at the U.S. Air Force Base at Yokota, causing minimal damage but no casualties.

7 July
Japan
Terrorists fired four home-made projectiles at the headquarters of the U.S. Air Force in Japan at Camp Zama. None of the projectiles exploded and little damage was caused.

27 July
Peru
After first spraying the building with automatic weapons, terrorists exploded a van bomb outside the U.S. Embassy in Lima. One embassy guard was injured. The explosion caused extensive damage to the embassy's facade and perimeter fence.

2 September
Italy
Three terrorists threw a handgrenade over the fence and also fired shots at the U.S. Air Force Base at Aviano. The Red Brigades terrorist group later claimed responsibility.

13 September
Russia
Unidentified assailants fired a rocket-propelled grenade at the US Embassy in Moscow, causing minor damage to a sixth-floor office. No injuries were reported. Authorities suspect the attack was in retaliation for US participation in NATO airstrikes against Bosnian Serb targets.

9 November
Algeria
Unidentified assailants set fire to the off-compound US Embassy warehouse in Algiers, destroying the facility and its contents. The Armed Islamic Group (GIA) may be responsible for the attack.

1996
15 February
Greece
Unidentified assailants fired a rocket at the US Embassy compound in Athens, causing minor damage to three diplomatic vehicles and some surrounding buildings. Circumstances of the attack suggest it was a 17 November operation.

25 June
Saudi Arabia
A fuel truck carrying a bomb exploded outside the US military's Khubar Towers housing facility in Dhahran, killing 19 US military personnel and wounding 515 persons, including 240 US personnel. Several groups claimed responsibility for the attack, which remains under investigation.

23 February

United States

A Palestinian gunman opened fire on tourists at an observation deck atop the Empire State building in New York City, killing a Danish national and wounding visitors from the United States, Argentina, Switzerland, and France before turning the gun on himself. A handwritten note carried by the gunman claimed this was a punishment attack against the "enemies of Palestine."

21 June
Lebanon
Unknown assailants fired four rocket-propelled grenades in the direction of the US Embassy in Beirut. The rockets exploded immediately after being launched, missing the Embassy.

7 August
Kenya
A bomb exploded at the rear entrance of the US Embassy in Nairobi, killing 12 US citizens, 32 Foreign Service Nationals (FSNs), and 247 Kenyan citizens. Approximately 5,000 Kenyans, six US citizens, and 13 FSNs were injured. The US Embassy building sustained extensive structural damage. The US Government is holding terrorist financier Usama Bin Ladin responsible.

Tanzania

Almost simultaneously, a bomb detonated outside the US Embassy in Dar es Salaam, killing seven FSNs and three Tanzanian citizens, and injuring one US citizen and 76 Tanzanians. The explosion caused major structural damage to the US Embassy facility. The US Government holds Usama Bin Ladin responsible.

1999
26 March

Serbia
Serbian demonstrators burned down the United States Information Service (USIS) American center.

12 October

Yemen
In Aden, a small dingy carrying explosives rammed the US destroyer, USS Cole, killing 17 sailors and injuring 39 others. Supporters of Usama Bin Ladin are suspected.

my source is here...
http://www.fattyboombatty.com/moreterroristacts.htm

now,if I add to the list all the attacks where Americans were killed, wounded or kidnapped, and all the attacks aimed at US based companies, the list would triple in size.

So I will just suggest that you go to my source and read the list yourself.

hmmm.... three thousand Americans and other nationals were killed in the twin towers. We have now lost over two thousand Americans in Iraq - and still counting.

Al Qaeda was the attacker, and Osama is still missing - operating his terroist organizations around the world.

What's wrong with this picture?

American Soil MM, I know you love to count embassies and such, but were talking about the American Soil. I don't accept installations in other countries which are easy to attack as U.S. American Soil!!

Plus, if you want to play games, lets take a toll of ALL the damage done that you site, and then the damage done under Bushes watch!! Let's see who wins the damage numbers.

If you want to count all the attacks in other countries, then I insist you count all the "terrorist attacks" in Iraq, which is basically everything!! At least, that what Bush says we're doing, fighting terrorists!!

They won't read anything that doesn't fit their ideology MM. Or history for that matter. If we are comparing numbers, for instance, far fewer Americans et al died in the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 than died on 9/11, while many tens of thousands died in the retaliation for that attack not even counting the many many more tens of thousands who died on other fronts as a result of us joining the war.

1. American soil is American soil. Otherwise we count everything, as MM wants to do!! How about the "Green Area" which we claim to be so safe, which takes it's occasional hit?? If you want your cake, we do too!!

2. "tens of thousands ..." I think you are referring to the Atomic bombs. If you are, that is exactly one of the reasons why I think we suck as a nation! That is a great example of our bullshit!! Now if you want to bring up it was a Democrat, that's fine. If it was up to me, I would just as soon put a bullet in Trumans head for that obvious war crime!!

You right,my apologies.

Anon,
I know you hate to admit it,but under international law,all diplomatic treaties, and international custom, embassies ARE considered the soil of whatever country they represent.

So,an attack on the US embassy in Kenya IS an attack on the US.
An attack on the Japanese embassy in Washington DC IS on attack on Japan, etc.

Also, the USS Cole was not an embassy, was it?

Now,you asked "How many terrorists attacks on American Soil",so I answered you.
I'm sorry if you dont like the answer, but that does not change the answer.
An attack on a US embassy, consulate,or diplomatic vehicle is an attack on the US,period!

It's also true that there were no more attacks on American soil after Pearl Harbor. To follow the logic of some here, however, you would think that since nobody bombed us afterwards, we should have just stayed home and rode it out.

No. They are extraterritorial areas - but still the soil of country they are in.

Show me one, just one of those treaties etc you called above, actual or in history, which claimed that otherwise.
