@dlowan,
I'm still smiling about it. We all met through the NYT and now one of her photos is on a NYT mag cover (and will apparently be available by poster).

@ossobuco,
Yesterday I talked to my best American friend Jenny - and she was so very American- it made me sort of homesick but it also made me smile and laugh out loud.

She was at work, because she sleeps late and goes into work at about eleven am, so that means she finishes work at 7 pm, so that means it's midnight before I can call her and reach her at home - so I just wanted to hear her voice so I called her cell phone and the reception wasn't great and she said something about 'despite her medicine she was feeling so and so' and I thought she had said she had 'spiked her medicine' and I said, 'How did you do that - isn't that dangerous?' and then she laughed and said, 'Yeah, Rebecca - I'm spiking my prescriptions with cocaine- just for the kick you know...' and we laughed and laughed.

@ossobuco,
Arriving at hamburger's house on Thursday night to find him in discussion with Thomas ... I could hear the laughter as I opened the door ... they hadn't even noticed me drive up. They started talking like they'd known each other forever. Then I got to join in ... and it was like the three of us were continuing a conversation that had started years ago.

Friday afternoon, brendalee joined us - she and Thomas got on like they'd been friends since forever.

There was a lot of smiling over the last 36 hours.

Made me happy to see my dad happy.

Yup, Thomas can make people happy, and he's a smarty-pants kid.

I wasn't quite sure where to put this one....but it did make me smile inside, but it's bitter sweet.

One of my munchkins today......a very little girl who has, of course, experienced awful things in her family.....became absolutely overwhelmed with anger at her mother today. As she busily beat the crap out of her using one of our punching bags, she disclosed scene after awful scene that she had witnessed.

I said at one point "I am so sorry that you had to see that happen."

She is not a little girl accustomed (yet) to empathy from those around her.

She stopped immediately, looked over at me with wide, worried eyes, and said with great kindness and reassurance: "Don't be sorry.....it's not YOUR fault."

I had to reassure her quite vehemently that I knew that, before she could resume her business.
