Were any of the big issues covered?

Like wage stagnation, banker fraud?

@farmerman,
This was actually my take too. I found it uninspiring at best. Trump was pretty much how I expected. But Clinton didn't really shine (I'm guessing this isn't a form of communication to her liking, though, to be fair not Trump's favorite either).

But given some of Trump's meandering maybe the wise thing was to just let him talk.

What the BBC has to say, (if anyone's interested.)

Quote:
Analysis: By Anthony Zurcher, BBC News, Washington

Donald Trump is the consummate salesman. Rules, tradition, even the truth are only relevant in so much as they help seal the deal.

The weaknesses of this approach is the perception that the salesman is all talk and no substance - a problem that can be exacerbated by 90 minutes under the debate spotlight.

In the end, the lawyerly preparations paid off for Mrs Clinton as she controlled the evening with forensic precision.

While Trump had a strategy - and pursued it on occasion - he was often blown off course by the former secretary of state and torpedoed by his own sometimes badgering performance.

While Mrs Clinton was occasionally prone to know-it-all-ness - particularly in her repeated appeals to outside fact-checkers - she largely maintained the upper hand.

@izzythepush,
Im not certain but there were a few actuall statements that Donald made which were enclosed within complete sentences.

He was rather rude with his nonensical butting in with more and more lies and was, therefore, easily baited by Ms Clinton. (I think he actually enjoyed toying with him after the first segment, when he reverted to his normal speech patterns.

Even Fox "analysis team" was pretty much on his case for an obvious lack of preparation. Sean Hannity was lter,trying to do his own brand of post mortum, nd surrounded himself with Trump advisors who did a fairly credible "barry Goldwater actually meant this"

@farmerman,
This is being discussed on the BBC right now. The message is that this debate hasn't changed minds but concreted already held perceptions. People who hated one of the candidates will still hate one of the candidates.

@izzythepush,
Both the Mexican Peso and the Canadian Dollar are up this morning with the Peso seeing a significant rise. The market is voting that Clinton had the stronger showing.

@engineer,
Yeah, but never underestimate the stupidity of the American voter.
The expectations were still set so that it was like a spelling bee with a Basset hound. One spelled all the words right, but the other is getting great credit for not shitting the floor.

That's actually true, which is why Clinton and her team would have had every expectation that her private mail server would not be handling classified materials.

Thanks for making my point for me.

Personally I was embarrassed last night we had a winner of a national party standing on stage for millions to hear and see. I think something must have been very wrong with Trump which could explain his rambling sentences which veered off into incoherence.

The First Debate Demonstrated Trump’s Incoherence—but Will It Change Any Minds?

@revelette2,
About 20 minutes in, and Trump was in a flop sweat. He had to keep wiping sweat from his upper lip. (or was he worried that he had some white powder on it?)

He repeatedly lied about his past statements, even though they're easily fact checked.

@DrewDad,
It seems to be a given politicians and mostly candidates tell lies or deceptions in debates, Trump told more than Hillary but Hillary told some as well but that in itself wouldn't be so unusual or dismaying . His manner of grimacing, talking into his mike while Hillary was speaking saying stuff like "wrong" which doesn't do him any good, fidgeting and just all around acting embarrassing up there for all the world to see. I mean he thinks he is qualified to be president and half the people here in this country agree with him, it just boggles my mind. He is Sara Palin to a higher degree if that is possible. The worse he got, the more confident Hillary and she loosened up for once to the point where she did a little sexy shake. Shocked me, didn't see that coming.

I've rarely seen even a politician just flat out deny they said something that can be easily verified. He's on tape about being in favor of invading Iraq. I've seen the screenshot of his tweet about global warming being a hoax perpetrated by China a dozen times.

While I don't like the lying, it's the stupidity of the lies that really strikes me. He's either delusional or an idiot. I can decide which option is worse.

I'll agree Trump handled the question noted above rather stupidly. He wasn't in public office when we invaded Iraqi and didn't have access to invormation available to government officials (such as it was) and had no role in any of the associated decision-making.

I believe the same statement as yours could as well be made about Hillary's many lies. " I wanted all my e mails on one device.." "We're going to prosecute the man who made the anti Moslem film that caused this attack: (To the asssembeled families of those killed at Dover AFB as their bodies were returned - just days after e mailing her daughter and the Egyptian Foreign Minister confirming it was an al Qaeda directed and led attack.) " We left the White House dead broke." ( and immediately bought two homes, each worth several millions) . That's just a small sample of the bald lies that come immediately to mind. There are of course many more Clintonian evasions of the truth through carefully parsed words, and evasions of responsibility through implausible (and irresponsible) denials ... "I wasn't aware of the security concerns and requests for more assets by our officials in Libya" ... after repeated reqwuests, including some directly from the Ambassador who was among the killed.
