Partly inspired by this thread and the six excellent documentaries I saw in the past ten days I decided to volunteer for this year's Hot Docs festival. Looking forward to it.

I'd be happy to digest any insider information you can divulge on any upcoming documentaries on the horizon.

@izzythepush,
I have a friend (assuming he is still alive) who used to edit for IMAX films back when they were sort of new; kind of nice for me to see the Imax name now.

@ossobucotemp,
I went to a film amusement park in France back when the kid was a toddler. That's the first time I saw it. There weren't many films though, we saw something about Japanese puppets.

Doctor Strange, and yeah, some rather strange concepts explored in this one.

@Builder,
Les Saisons (2015), French wildlife documentary: stunningly shot and edited. Ruined by arbitrary insertion of prehistoric man subplot. Rated 6/10.

@tsarstepan,
Earlier this afternoon,
Logan (2017), worthwhile comic book movie that easily surpasses the previous two standalone Wolverine films. This one properly ends the Hugh Jackman era of the X-Men franchise. 8/10.

Retro Puppet Master (1999 video), 1/10; Rifftrax commentary: 9/10. Some of the worst European accents to have ever graced the tarnished silver screen.

@tsarstepan,

Pearl (2016), animated short film nominated this year. If you have a Oculus Riff or Google Cardboard or Samsung Gear VR, it would be best to watch it in that format.

Just saw the movie "K - 19 Widowmaker" starring Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson about one of the first two Soviet nuclear-powered submarines carrying ballistic missiles. It's about an incident in 1961 with the submarine experiencing a total loss of coolant in one of its reactors and a resulting near meltdown. The crew jury-rigged another cooling system barely avoiding a meltdown and ignition of its ballistic missiles which would hawadeve obliterated a nearby U.S. Destroyer possibly igniting a nuclear war. Seven crew members died within a few days and radiation exposure and another 22 within two years.

This is a movie I hadn't heard of before, and it's one of the best I've seen in a long time. I highly recommend it.

@tsarstepan,
THURSDAY NIGHT:
The Rifftrax Live edition of Samurai Cop.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON:
Colossal Anne Hathaway's funny and original take on the kaiju subgenre of the monster movie. A surprisingly deep metaphor for emotional and physical abuse in relationships.

I've been a little obsessed with an original series The Americans. Historical fiction during the Reagan area, the story centers around Russian spies living in deep cover in DC.

I think it's well done.

Streaming on Amazon.

I went to a movie theater today to see Kedi, a documentary on street cats in Istanbul, which I thought would be a full length version of a cute cat video. And for 30 minutes it was exactly that. It was random Turks talking about the street cats they had befriended and the kind of things the cats did during their daily lives. Smile

Then **** gets serious, and we hear about the consequences of economic development for the street cats. Mad

Not cool!

I had just come up for air from 80 hours of brain work this week, and I wanted to wash away my thoughts and worries for an hour and a half. I left after first half hour.

@Kolyo,
If there were only these things called... film reviews? Nah. They don't exist. Like unicorns and moderate Republicans. Laughing Rolling Eyes

Guardians of the Galaxy.

Thought I'd better watch it again, before the sequel comes out.
