Wonder Boys (2000)

Starring Michael Douglas, Tobey Maguire, Robert Downey jr., and Frances McDormand.

Michael Douglas plays a literature professor and Tobey Maguire is a student. Both are writing novels. It's a drama/comedy and comes across as a serious comedy of errors. If you missed this one, it's very well worth your time to check it out.

Based on your recommendation...my wife and I watched Wonder Boys last night before the Hearings.

We both enjoyed it very much. Probably would not have seen it without the recommendation.

The Rewrite (2014)

Hugh Grant and Marissa Tomei. They're a lot older now, and, truthfully, I didn't recognize either one of them, but they're good actors.

The Hugh Grant character is a struggling screenwriter with a very successful movie to his credit who stoops to accept a teaching job at a conservative university in Binghamton, New York. He dislikes teaching, but will he adapt, and will he survive?

Yes, it's a romance, but the romance is low key and not the end all. After all, these are older people, and though teenagers might be bored with this movie, I loved it. The drama is toned down considerably considering the theme, and I like it that way. Hyperbole takes a back seat.

Housekeeping (1987)

A drama/comedy starring Christine Lahti and based on a novel of the same name.

This is one you probably missed, and it's worthwhile watching provided you like subtle plots centering on an eccentric female character.

Lahti plays Sylvie, an itinerant who travels (freight hopping) to the fictional town of Fingerbone, Idaho and ends up unintentionally taking care of her two orphaned nieces, though it's questionable who's taking care of who.

You may end up identifying with the protagonist or at least tolerating her, which the townspeople seem unable to do.

I love the movie, and it's available free on Tubi.

@coluber2001,
I saw it a few years ago—and liked it, too, for the reasons you mentioned. Low key, Hugh Grant’s more understated humor, Tomei.

I caught Adam Sandler’s Hustle.

I don’t know why I’m mentioning it. Sandler’s character once again is appealing. He’s married to Queen Latifah and performing a challenging draining job as a scout for a Philly ball club.

You can see the plot coming from a mile away, but if you like sports movies, Sandler, ….

no, never mind. You’re going to have to like one of those things to enjoy this movie.

Ruby Sparks (2012)

Successful writer Calvin lacks only a meaningful relationship, and she miraculously appears one day. It's the old Pygmalion theme, and her incarnation apparently is created by his writing. It's a dream come true, but is it? There are problems, and he has to come to terms with them.

The Grand Seduction (2013)

With Brendan Gleeson, who is known for playing Alastor Moody in the Harry Potter films.

Filmed in Tickle Cove, Newfoundland and Labrador. That is, the hamlet is somehow in both provinces.

Tickle Head is a fictional, former cod-fishing hamlet with a population of about 120. Most of the residents now live on welfare checks, but Tickle Head is a proposed site for a petrochemical factory. The stipulation is that they have a resident doctor, a work force of 150, and a $100,000 bribe.

Dr. Paul Lewis, young doctor and plastic surgeon, is caught with cocaine and sentenced to being the doctor in Tickle Head for one month. Brendan Gleeson plays Murray French the leader of the plan to seduce the doctor into becoming a resident so they can have their factory.

The residents, led by Murray French, make a concerted effort, ad absurdum, to seduce the doctor into staying.

The Door in the Floor (2004)

Starring Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger

Adapapted from the first part of John Irving's novel A Widow for One Year.

Ted Cole is a writer and illustrator of children's books. But his marriage is in trouble. He hires an young assistant who bears a resemblance to his and his wife's dead son Thomas who, along with their other son, Timothy, was killed in an automobile accident.

Marion Cole never got over the deaths of their two sons and remains in a brooding state, and Ted thinks she may be helped by the appearance of the assistant. Perhaps it does help her, but it also precipitates the end of the troubled marriage.

Critics have hailed this movie as one of the best movies adapted from a John Irving novel and one of Jeff Bridges' best performances ever, perhaps because his character, Ted Cole, is such an interesting and likable person.

Though the theme of the movie is a seemingly dour one, it is pleasant to watch. The mood is not depressing, and the film is interspersed with humor.

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency

Adapted from the novel by Douglas Adams ( Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy).

It's a very complex, confusing series involving time travel and soul swapping. But it's so well done that I've watched it several times already. It involves the Rowdy 3, a group of 4 men who travel in a van and bust things up. And a kitten that changes to a pulse of destructive, hammerhead shark energy. And an invincible killer woman named Bart who just goes around killing anybody that she feels needs to be killed.

"Everything's connected."

Confused? Me too. I still am, but I love it.

Just watched 13 Lives - a Ron Howard directed movie about the rescue of a Thai boys soccer team from miles deep in a submerged cave. It’s a true story as you probably remember the news.

I wanted to see it mostly because I heard Ron Howard was directing, and I don’t think he’s done a single film I didn’t like.

He manages to make it nerve wracking and tense, even if you know the outcome - much as he was able to do with Apollo 13.

Virgo Mortenson and Colin Ferrel are two of the rescue divers.

It’s a good one.

Interstate 60 (2002)

Starring James Marsden Gary Oldman, Christopher lloyd, and Chris Cooper

You may have missed this comedy/fairy tale.

Gary Oldman is O. W. Grant, One Wish Grant, a sort of American style leprechaun who grants one wish to Neal who makes a deal to deliver a package with unknown contents along the non-existing Interstate 60. The theme of the movie is that it's the journey and not the end that's important.

This is a refreshing fairy tale that's well-written and executed.

@Ron Swanson,
The Answer Man (2009) romantic comedy

Starring Jeff Daniels

Semi-reclusive writer famously adored for books on his conversations with God struggles in a relationship with a chiropractor. One of the funniest scenes is the writer crawling down a busy sidewalk to the clinic because his back went out.

He has a cult following because of the subject matter of his books, but he comes clean and breaks the spell with his adoring public, and comes across as a fraud.

@coluber2001,
I'm rewatching Mr Selfridge, a Masterpiece Theater series about the Selfridge department store in London, a revolutionary store at the time. This is much more interesting than it would seem because of the amazing personality of the titular character.

It's available free on Amazon's Freevee app.

Last night I watched a Netflix movie called 6 Underground with Ryan Reynolds. Pretty good movie, action packed from beginning to end. I was hoping they would make a sequel but after searching online Netflix has no intentions of making a second one.

Ryan Reynolds is one of those stars who almost guarantees for me an enjoyable movie. The guy has a great personality...and it shows in his acting.

I'm gonna take a look at that 6 Underground.

@Frank Apisa,
Not a Ryan Reynolds fan, but his recent Netflix Sci-Fi movie The Adam Project was pretty entertaining, if you haven't seen it.
