@hightor,

Yes. And I'll add that undermining trust in Western news media is a facet of this campaign even if it has also been a strategy long utilized by America's right (Eric Alterman's What Liberal Media remains one of the best books I've read on this subject).
Over the last year or two, as I've mentioned previously, I have been following the Facebook pages of Canada's media giant, Global. I don't have the tech savvy to assert with certainty this or that account is a bot or a fake account but behaviors are quite easy to identify. For sure, some posters are legitimate but as these people are swimming in a river of disinformation or misinformation they pick up behaviors they've seen elsewhere and duplicate it thus multiplying the effects of professional trolling operations.
Many news items posted on Global's FB site pass with no or few comments. But
any news item which has content including Trudeau or BC's NDP government and/or their policies are immediately filled with troll posts. Likewise every news items on Covid, vaccines, the truckers' protests in Ottawa, the WHO or NATO or global warming/climate. Likewise any item on the war in Ukraine (Nazis and biolabs and Zelensky pocketing millions!) Right now, news coverage on California's massive rainfall plight get filled quickly with accusations that Global is conspiring to "misinform and frighten people" (actual quote from yesterday). It's really quite a cesspool of trolls and the many (mostly people with paltry educations) who have been profoundly influenced by bad actors in social media.
The goal of all disinformation is to make people stupid. It's clearly working.
