The Olympic Games in Athens will start in a couple of weeks.
Perhaps a Fantasy Prediction Game will make them more fun.

6 Simple Rules of the Game:

1. Every participant will choose a "team" of 15 national olympic teams (divided by gender in the case of the USA and Russia teams). The aggregate result of these national olympic teams will determine the winner, on the basis of 5 points for every gold medal, 3 points for every silver medal, and 1 point for every bronze medal.

2. The 15 national olympic teams must be chosen from 4 different pools, in which the nations have been divided, according to their performance in Sydney 2000, plus a host nation factor.

3. Each participant must choose 2 olympic teams from Group A, 3 olympic teams from Group B, 5 olympic teams from Group C and 5 Olympic teams from Group D (with encompasses all nations not in any of the former groups).

4. Since the USA and Russia Olympic Teams gets the most medals, they will be divided in USA Male, USA Female, Russia Male, Russia Female. Any medal won by a mixed duo or team (equestrian team medals, for example), will count for both male and female teams.

5. The medal count will be based on the OIC count. That is, collective medals count as one.

6. All participants must enter their predictions before midnight August 12, US CST (which is also Mexico City's Razz ).

NEW DEADLINE: 23:59, August 13, CST (07:59 Athens time)
Prizes:

Winner: Virtual Gold Medal, and congratulations from every one.
Runner Up: Virtual Silver Medal.
Third Place: Virtual Bronze Medal.

Groups:

Group A:

USA Men
USA Women
Russia Men
Russia Women
Germany
China

Group B:

Australia*
Cuba
France
Greece*
Italy
Japan
Netherlands
Romania
South Korea
Ukraine
United Kingdom

Group C:

Belarus
Brazil
Bulgaria
Canada
Czech Republic
Denmark
Ethiopia
Hungary
Indonesia
Jamaica
Kazakhstan
Kenya
Mexico
Norway
Poland
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland

Group D:

All other participant national olympic teams.

*Australia's 2000 performance would put the team in Group A, and Greece's 2000 performance would put the team in Group C, the promotion and demotion are due to the change of host city.

I'll do my best to post daily standings of the A2K Fantasy Olympics Predition Game.

Good luck to everyone.

Edited for new deadline for entries.

well, where are others? I think you should refresh that topic from time to time fbaezer, so that more people see it...
anyway...here are my votes:

Group A: China, Germany
Group B: Australia, France, Greece
Group C: Poland, Canada, Bulgaria, Hungary, Belarus
Group D: Iran, New Zealand, Morocco, Bahamas, Austria (actually, fbaezer, Croatia might be great choice, we have more medal hopes then ever, but of course that doesn't have to mean anything - I am not choosing us just because I don't want to curse them Wink ).

One more thing - maybe good thing would be to think about slight change in the rules. Because, in Group A results will be pretty much similar, and much much bigger numbers then in other groups, so maybe A and B can count as 1, while C and D (or maybe only D) can be multiplied by 2? After all, it's much harder to guess countries from bottom lists.

4 contestants so far. Now at least one of use will not get a medal. Most people sign in during the last days, anyway.
Easy peasy, Scrat? Let's see how you fare!

Good point, MOU, but rules were set beforehand, and I think it's better not to change them after inscriptions.
Besides, we most remember that the color of the medal is of utmost importance. One gold equals 5 bronzes.

What I'll do is add a tie-breaker:

7. In the event participants tie in the number of points, the winner will be the one who makes the most points among Group D olympic national teams. If the tie continues, then the winner will be the one who makes the most points among Group C. If it is still a tie, the winner will be whoever makes the most points among Group B.

Sports Illustrated just issued it's special olympic edition, with Brian Cazenueve's medal predictions.

Cazenueve had a remarkable ratio of success in Sydney 2000. More than 60 per cent of his chosen medalists did win a medal, regardless of color.

interesting stuff - have you searched where he predicts Mexicans to take medals? He predicts gold, silver and bronze for Croatia, although I think he'll end up pretty wrong Smile He predicts gold for taekwondo fighter which I really have no idea why, silver for handball team that will probably disappoint, and bronze for rowing pair that hardly can be worse then second. And he doesn't mention Blanka Vlasic in high jump (never this year lower then third on any competition), weight lifter Nikolaj Pesalov (never in career lower then third Wink ), waterpolo team that should grab a medal...
We'll see - I disagree with him Wink
