Messy Athens
This Olympic is full of controversies -- doping, shooting too fast/too slow/wrong target, and questionable judging, etc.

Today a Germen gold medal is stripped. Read it here from the BBC: Equestrian Medal Re-assignment

No telling what's gonna happen tomorrow.

And this would be the Best Possible Team, after 10 days of competition:

China
USA Men

Japan
Australia
France

Hungary
Spain
Belarus
Poland
Bulgaria

Slovakia
Turkey
Georgia
Austria
Thailand

It would total 757 points.

So far, our leader is at 93.5% of that perfect mark.

Hold your amazement, osso. Douglashuang has PM'd me to notice that the optimum team sums 779 points. (That's what happens when you count with your fingers Laughing )

That makes him to be only at 90.9% of the perfect mark.

I guess Craven is catching up because you have Mexico among your choices and this games have been, so far, a total fiasco (it's not me who says so, but the head of the National Sports Commission, who will probably join the unemployed very soon).

Thok thought he had clinched 5 points with Mozambique. Incredibly, Maria Mutola gave him none.

Agree with husker - one of the greatest robberies of all time.

Hey, Thok, can I ask you something? I am thinking about it from the first day you posted your predictions Smile
Why Guatemala? I am asking you that especially because you picked Mozambique and because I also thought it's good choice because of certain 5 points. But, I really can't recall any athlete from Guatemala that is medal prospect, and I am sure there is someone that made you choose them Wink

The greatest Guatemalan olympian is Oswaldo Mendez, who finished 4th in equestrian individual jumpling in Moscow '80 (I remember that competition: the Mexican got bronze).

and, although it seems absolutely unbeliavable, I have a memory that ex-Yugoslavian waterpolo team beat Guatemala 32:0 once. I am so sure in that memory, although I really can't understand how could that happen.

Are we watching the last Olympic Games ... ?
Is this the last Summer Olympic without genetically enhanced athletes? Will 2008 be the last one? Forget about doping, that's just child's play. Muscle enhancing gene therapy is on its way. Read about it from ScientificAmerican.com Gene Doping

Some estimate that the technology is only 4 to 5 years away.

Here is another article (much shorter, without the scientific stuffs) from the NY Times: Building Better Bodies

Enjoy the games while you can.

(checked) RESULTS AFTER 12 DAYS OF COMPETITION -with a little help of douglashuang's better spreadsheet- , with all the re-assigned medals so far:

1. douglashuang -780 points
2. markr - 771 points
3. MOU - 695 points
4. fbaezer - 654 points
5. Laeknir Scrat - 623 points
6. pnut - 593 points
7. ossobuco - 553 points
8. Craven de Kere - 526 points
9. Patada Veloz - 484 points
10. Thok - 461 points
11. jabs - 438 points

The leaders, douglashuang and markr are still very close, as we approach the last four laps. MOU hangs to his bronze medal... all the others struggle but are still in the competition.

This would be the best bet, after 12 days of competition:

China (180)
US Men (133)

Australia (128)
Japan (112)
France (80)

Hungary (39)
Spain (36)
Belarus (26)
Canada (23)
Poland or Sweden (20)

Turkey (19)
Austria (18)
Slovakia (17)
Georgia (13)
Thailand (12)

That makes a perfect grand total of 856 points, and puts our current leader at 91.1% of accuracy.

(checked) RESULTS AFTER 13 DAYS OF COMPETITION -with a little help of douglashuang's better spreadsheet- , with all the re-assigned medals so far:

1. douglashuang -821 points
2. markr - 817 points
3. MOU - 722 points
4. fbaezer - 700 points
5. Laeknir Scrat - 650 points
6. pnut - 621 points
7. ossobuco - 573 points
8. Craven de Kere - 560 points
9. Patada Veloz - 529 points
10. Thok - 477 points
11. jabs - 460 points

douglashuang and markr are now only 4 points apart!
MOU... watch out for the Cuban boxers!
Laeknir Scrat's 5th place is not confortable any more.
osso... Craven is known for his strong finishes.
Thok: jabs is nearing you, and Patada Veloz swiftly scapes your grip.
