What cave people? We do have the a vast body of various types of societies extant today to consider, ranging from hunter-gatherer tribal groups to the most technologically advanced habitat exploiters. Has anybody read any statistics on the frequency of monogamy in various of today's cultures? (Monogamy as a cultural construct rather than a strictly observed practice, of course!)

Actually I did do a lot of reading on this in Anthro classes in College. The details are fuzzy. Certainly many 'primitive' cultures don't do marriage rituals. They do have pairing rituals usually, even if it's just one moving into the other's hut or sharing a meal together. The bonding tended to be based on child-rearing. Often there was serial bonding. I think that in non-polygamous cultures, there tends to be a sense of monogamy. If the child isn't a man's kid for sure, why should he hunt for it?

I don't know the %ages. Where's that thread of setanta's....?

hmmmm - at what point do we think people discovered that all that silly grunting and wiggling that felt good had anything to do with babies?

Hey JerryR- I would accept you if you said "I am JerryR, and I am an Iguana". The reason? I don't mess around with anybody holding the kind of cutlery that you are! Laughing Laughing

I second misti's emotion. You are a together person.
When I bring out my spiritual beliefs, when it comes up on a thread, I know there will be some people who automatically assign me a slot in a narrow category.

The problem is: people don't fit so neatly into preconceived categories. And we all deserve the right to reveal ourselves as people, not members of some group.

Your comments gave a needed view to this thread. Thanks for sharing.

JerryR, I don't understand why people have a problem with homosexuals. It's not as if they need to mind what everybody else does in the privacy of their home or hotel room whether they be heterosexual or homosexual. I just don't get it, and only see it as another form of discrimination. c.i.

JerryR, seriously though, I don't appreciate a person who identifies himself primarily by his sexuality, race, religion, or social status. I find that a big turn off. If it is not the same as mine, he is immediately separating us. We are all human beings. The rest are simply details!

Why have a parade cuz you're Irish, why have a parade cuz you believe in Santa Claus? I'm sure there were once 'reasons' for all of these things. Socio-Political reasons in some cases. Economic in others. I go cuz they're fun. Toronto's Gay Pride Day (which is now close to 2 weeks of fun) is one of the best events in town to participate in.

Hi All!!

Misti,...Thanks!! Embarrassed

Phoenix,..I know the avatar looks dangerous,..but keep in mind,..it's a muppet,..a muppet with a cleaver Shocked , but still a muppet! Laughing I'm glad you agree with the identity problem i mentioned! Very Happy

Lashgoth,..Thanks! Very Happy Yeah people are pretty tough on those who are different,..it's not right, but it is a fact of life. I think that it's more likely because it's not "close to home". I've found that when people know you, before they know your differences, that those differences really don't matter in the end.

cicerone imposter,... I can understand why some people have a problem with gays. Religion has alot to do with it (heck, I'm catholic,..and I was an altar boy and no-one ever touched me,...oh now I'm sad Crying or Very sad ,.. Laughing ) Tasteless joke aside, the whole sadness with all of those priests is kind of bad for the image. It's a whole mindset, it's changed dramatically for the better in my lifetime, and I believe that it will eventually become of minimal concern to people.

ehBeth,..Yeah the events are fun,..heck, the gay community throws a hell of a party, for any old reason,..it can be a great time.
A parade for sexual preference still seems really silly to me though,..and always will!

JerryR, All my siblings are christians, and I'm an atheist. Their religion tells them that homosexuality is wrong. I have no such hangups, because I love all peoples. My sister tells me she loves homosexuals too, but do not approve of their lifestyle, because she believes they can change. They still pray for me, but I think they are the ones that needs praying. c.i.

c.i.:

Christianity is not the only religion that preaches against homosexualtiy.

Judaism and Islam do also.

cicerone imposter,..Sometimes we all need praying! Laughing
I am familiar with this kind of belief. I'd just like to know when my lifestyle became subject to the "approval" of others. It's a very egocentric way to think.

New Haven,..Many religions dislike homosexuality, or that belief can be read into their writings. Seems kind of wrong, that these religions, most of which preach love and acceptance, find reasons to disapprove. As I mentioned, I am Catholic, I find it hard to believe the God would make me this way, and not want me to be happy. This is where I believe that some have written too many flawed "human" beliefs into religious scripture.
If I am kind, live a good and generous life, nurture my fellow man and do my best to make the world a better place,...then I have a really hard time believing that God cares about who I sleep with.

JerryR, I'm impressed with your candor and your views on homosexuality. Because of my fundamentalist religious upbringing, I've had difficulty accepting that homosexuality is natural. This is what really struck me:

I stopped going to church several years ago, although I still believe in God. Certain people are always telling me I'll never get to heaven because I'm no longer an active church member. I've told them essentially what you said in the quote of yours posted above.

Thank you for helping me open my eyes a little wider.
Very Happy
