@Olivier5,
I've yet to see proof of that.

@izzythepush,
You would see it if it bit your arse.

@Olivier5,
And that's supposed to work as a metaphor?

What is "it" supposed to be?

@izzythepush,
'It' refers to what you say you haven't seen: the proof of my knowing best.

Those who don't get jokes are destined to be the but of them... :-)

@Olivier5,
And you think that's something you can personify?

Now you're sounding like BillRM.

For a start what you said was not a joke, at best it was a wisecrack, but it wasn't a very good wisecrack. You need something that can be expressed in a single word. As in You wouldn't know style if it bit you on the arse, or comedy/intelligence/literature, basically anything as long as it's one, (or possibly two,) word(s.) The phrase You wouldn't know the proof that I am right if it bit you on the arse, is too clumsy and doesn't work as a metaphor even when you substitute a pronoun.

Brevity is the soul of wit.

@izzythepush,
Your raised your daughter to think your sense of humour was the greatest of all... That's what went wrong. Now the poor kid will try and emulate you. She is doomed to belabour anxious flaccidity jokes all her life... Don't you have no shame?

Probably, but definitely old enough to construct a coherent sentence.

That's a double negative.

You don't know anything about how I raised my daughter.

And you're not even on nodding terms with comedy.

A lot of people think they're funny, around friends, but the only way to know for sure is to try standing up in front of an audience of 200 strangers and see how that goes down. Once you've done that you know, and you're really not bothered what some humourless individual has to say on the matter.
