Well no mention of a wife is in the gospels.
Some of the disciples were married, and later Paul said "it's fine to marry and it's also fine not to marry", whatever floats your boat.
I've been a lifelong bachelor although I've had my- ahem- "moments" with women. The last "moment" was 12 years ago but since then I've made no serious attempt to hook up with any more, I just can't be bothered to make the effort (yawn).
We holy men can do without women quite easily..
The problem with marriage, in my opinion, is men and women often marry for the unconscious purpose of having someone in their lives that substitute for the love they once received, as a child, from the parent of the opposite sex. However, in my opinion again, no one can supplant, or substitute for, the love that a father has for a daughter, or a mother has for a son.
So, to marry and remain married, in my opinion again, one must be ready for a degree of (unconscious) disappoint. Having a thick skin is helpful too. Nowadays, a marriage can be emotional combat. like the early days of WWI, where little action took place, but troops were honkered down. Call me a romantic.
