Actually, only reprobates, guttersnipes, ragamuffins, yokels, swagmen and tatterdemalion would believe such blasphemous talk!

That's amusing, but would you mind repeating what you said in ordinary words?

Well, I have it from good authority that life on the savannah got sort of boring, and someone said that a trek into Europe might be interesting, since there are Neanderthals there, and someone was needed to domesticate wolves into dogs. The rest is history.

Do u have any ideas as to the reason for those historical anti-Jewish problems?
To what shud their troubles be attributed ?
Lustig Andrei wrote:
That's an easy one. It's attributable simply to the fact that throughout history the Jews living among gentile Europeans deviated in their customs and behaviour quite significantly from the cultural norms set by the dominant culture, i.e. Christian Europe. They were hated for no other reason than that they were different, not conforming to the folkways of the people among whom they dwelt.
Really?
I wonder if Foofie agrees.
In my observation of Jews in NY, especially in NY Mensa,
including my Jewish girlfriends who lived with me (seriatim),
Jews do not discernibly differ; indistinguishable in their conduct,
except regarding holidays from work. (I never took particular notice
of what anyone orders in restaurants.) The Jews whom I have in mind
made a particular point of identifying themselves as being Jewish
(some of them doing so several times) otherwise, I 'd not necessarily
have known whether or not thay were Jewish; my point is that
I have not found them to be as different in their folkways as u say.

David

Certain supposedly "Jewish" habits are really customs from the country's they lived in, in Europe. Talking with one's hands is seen in certain countries in Europe, including Russia. Exhaling as one sits down, I thought was a custom in Germany. Talking loud is a Russian habit. In effect, Jews were different from the Anglo-Saxon society that met them, when they arrived in the U.S.A.

Also, the emphasis on literacy, and civil behavior was not necessarily the social mores of NYC in the late 19th century. Not being heavy social drinkers was also looked upon as odd. All in my opinion, of course.
Thank u, Foofie. I had not noticed qua the exhalation.
Y do thay wear those little hats ?
Is it a violation of rules to fail to wear one of them?

David, it's hard for me to believe that you live in NYCity or even in the USA.
In Judaism, there is a significant difference between ultra-Orthodox Judaism and for example, Reform Judaism. Place an ultra-Orthodox Jewish woman next to a Reform Jewish woman and you'd have to be blind not to notice the difference. But, that's just physical difference. There are major difference in diet also and other aspects of their daily living.

Are you familiar with Hasidic Judaism?

Do you know what a kosher diet is, or even a kosher life style is?

Time for David's education to expand.

I wud not dispute u; u sound like u have a clear understanding of the subject,
but this information is beyond my knowledge. I take your word for it.

U know, Dr. Miller, your post reminded me
that altho I 've seen the males' black colored dress
(distinct n memorable) I don t believe that I 've ever seen
how their females dress. I doubt that I 'd recognize it.
( U mentioned the 2 different Jewish women together. )

I do. My maternal grandfather was an ethnic Jew who came from a Conservative lifestyle. He grew up in a household using two sets of dishes, one for meat and one for dairy. They did not eat pork and ate only kosher food. The meat was koshered before cooking. The Sabbath began at sundown on Friday, and ended at sundown on Saturday night. Many refrain from smoking on the Sabbath and driving cars. The women dress modestly as do the men. The Orthodox men wear yarmulkes everyday, all day, and the women when going out wear wigs and dress in dresses below the knees. In Synagogue, the women sit separately from men even at weddings.

Today, a large number of Jewish progeny descendants of the older generation in my distant family are secular with many marrying non-Jewish mates. In fact, this is what some in Israel is afraid of, the dwindling number of ethnic Jews marrying outside the faith.

I'm delighted my post offered some insight on this particular subject, but tell me, Rabel222, why do you always put yourself down. I respect your mind tremendously and I suspect so do others on a2k..

Perhaps you should strive harder to not falsely accuse others of stupidity.

I don't think there is anything wrong with stupid people (far worse to be mean or cruel, in my view). But if a stupid person keeps falsely accusing me of being stupid, eventually I will lose my patience and point out just who goes where on the intellectual totem pole.

@Moment-in-Time,
Trying to beat others to it. One tends to get above ones self and I try to keep in mind that I have opinions which I express here which arnt always facts. I have an average 78 year old mind which I find is slipping as I get older. Not complaining as everyone who has the priviledge of getting older starts slipping. But some realize this and others think that older is always smarter.

My questions were directed to David who I regard as a sincere friend. As an observant Jew, I already know the answers to the questions I've asked David. By the way, it's not a smart idea to take a quote out of context for any reason.
