@Olivier5,
Not yet. I try to stay active - both physically and mentally. The mental part can be questioned, but I try.

If you tell me what's "misleading," maybe I can answer you.

Misleading is when you say 16% of the population are German when you mean that 16% have German roots.

I've spoken to my daughter about this, she says it's an American thing, she's spoken to loads of Americans all claiming to be all sorts of weird and wonderful things, and attributing all sorts of character traits as a result. She pointed me to a blog by an Irishman who complained that when he was in America he had to say he was from Ireland, not that he was Irish, because if he said he was Irish people thought he was American.

I think it's bizarre to say the least, it doesn't happen anywhere else, it seems this terminology is unique to America. Having said that, when talking to Americans I do try to avoid vernacular which I know would confuse them. This is an international forum after all.

@izzythepush,
... and even these "German roots" are questionable. (Many say that they came from "Palentine". Those "German Palatines" were about 11,000 Germans who emigrated to England (and many of those later to the USA). A bit more than the half came from the County Palatine of the Rhine(which later became "Electoral Palatinate"), others from various south German counties and principalities. Nearly all Catholics and about half of the Protestants returned from England to their countries of origin ... ... ...

@Walter Hinteler,
I think it's a cultural thing, in a land of immigrants they all seem to need some way of expressing their individuality. It's strange to us, but what's quite disturbing is that they all seem to think that we should automatically understand their strange quirks, and that the rest of the world thinks like America.

Being English makes me a mongrel anyway, up to 1066 there were Celts, Romans, (and other denizens of said empire), Germans, Dutch, Norwegians, French, Danes and Swedes all making up what is England. That's not including the thousands of immigrants from all over the world that have come over here since.

It's a lot easier just to say I'm English, regardless of what diverse nationalities form my genetic makeup.

@izzythepush,
England conquered China, India, Africa, and tried to bend the Americas to their will for financial gain. They did this with military power. Now go on and tell me what a stupid bastard I am for not agreeing with everything you think.

@cicerone imposter,
If he can keep us defending our posts he dosent have to prove his lies. All these "im smarter than you guys" use this "you said this prove it" strawman in order to keep from having to answer to their own statements. Like correcting spelling as if they were a school teacher. Just a cheap putdown to boost themselves in their own eyes. I dont try to prove facts that most educated people know are true. The others dont count because nothing will convince them they are wrong.

You are absolutely correct. In most cases, it's a waste of time and effort, but I'm easily baited to respond. Mr. Green Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

The nerve of those people, sending documents in their native language. I'm sure the US translates all documents for people who make requests.

That almost certainly would have been Japanese Kanji, Japanese Hiragana and likely some Japanese Katakana, that all Japanese know how to read, CI.

my brother had a friend from Japan, a professor, who translated over 90% of the document into English.

See.

Did you have any relatives in Hiroshima that were vaporized by the Americans dropping that atomic bomb, yet another in a long list of US war crimes - targeting civilians?

They could have helped you read the documents.

You really ought to retract your title that you gave to this thread, CI, 'cause you've proven far beyond any doubt that it's you that's the dummy.

Okay. So his great, great-grandfather had been born of an African slave mother and white Scottish father.

One of my great, great-grandfathers was French.
Je pense, il est une idée folle que mes racines sont françaises ...

My (paternal) grandmother's family emigrated in the 12th century to the Netherlands. And (some) came back here in 15th century.
Ben ik Nederlands?

My (maternal) grandfather's family came in the 17th century from Austria.
Bin i nen Ösareicha?

I'm a European, born in Germany.

He does.

It's hardly my own kind of accuracy, German means German, a person from Germany. It does not mean someone who can trace their ancestry back to Germany, even though Germany may not even have existed.

How far back to you want to go, because in the end we're all Africans?

That's a scientific fact. How far you wish to go "back" is not my problem when discussing slaves from Africa.

You need to pay attention, CI, and address all the issues. Where is that great skill, debating, that USians learn in school?

Where have all the other great principles, forged in fire and under great duress, by the founding fathers, gotten to?

These principles were, "How can we turf out the legal government of the day so we can steal all these riches from Native Americans and keep them for ourselves? We could invent a whole string of lies, backed up with high falutin' language, stolen from European writers, to pretend we're doing this to save the oppressed."

The US-facility under construction at its military base in Wiesbaden-Erbenheim is for military intelligence ... with "some NSA activities.
The spokesperson from the headquarters in Heidelberg told spiegel-online, to direct questions directly to the NSA.

The Consolidated Intelligence Center, responsible for data-gathering from 51 countries - including Russia and Israel - is to be completed by the end of 2015 ...

You should probably just emphasize the Italian part, R. When you go abroad, sew an Italian flag on your backpack, and whatever you do, keep your mouth shut - or fumble around with an Italian-whatever dictionary.
