@Walter Hinteler,

True, but the way things are going in Europe you will all be eligible for citizenship in Russia whether you want too or not.

@revelette2,
How about thinking about changing it rather than ignoring it like most of the governing citizens do. Just too much trouble to put ones self to.

Speak for your self. The correct response is I have the government I want.

That wasn't easy even for citizen's of the so-called "satellite countries" before 1990 (but during Catherine the Great's reign many Germans indeed got dual Russian-German citizenship)

Jesus christ in heaven. Would everybody please just settle down here. It's not as if Snowden has done something inarguably perverse in conflating the sacredness of America with the utter profanity of the Ruskies.

The BBC did a brilliant TV series The Power Of Nightmares, all of it is available on Youtube. This is the introduction to the series which gives a taste of the whole. It is really informative.

@izzythepush,
Very true; governments use fear to control its people, and its the new 'religion.' We all know about the old religion that controlled the masses. Fear works on the majority; history proves it.

@cicerone imposter,
According to spiegel-online, the German Government wants to know the name of all foreign spies here: on Wednesday, the Foreign Office has sent a note verbale in this matter to all embassies ...
(There are more than 200 intelligence officers with diplomatic status in the US-embassy alone ...)

@izzythepush,
The true exemplar of "fear" in today's life, Izzy...

...is shown by the people who post provocative messages day after day...

...but do it using aliases and disguised avatars.

There are people right here in this forum...in the thread, in fact...who speak of fear as though they have none...and who question the bravery and character of others. But they are not brave enough to post using their real names or to otherwise identify themselves.

The Internet forum...with its loud-mouthed phonies posting provocative, supposedly courageous comments under cover of anonymity, truly are people who have fear running their lives.

The fact that they are such cowards that they would question the "fear factor" in people who do not hide their identities...is laughable.

Just sayin'!

@Frank Apisa,
Was that directed at me? I keep my identity secret, with good reason, I've got children and their safety is paramount.

Do you think the BBC documentary is provocative? It's meticulously researched and highly academic. Personally I think it should be compulsory viewing. It makes a change from the reactionary bullshit a lot of people are told is fact.

Look what Russia is doing to internet usage. This is a lesson on what happens when free speech is restricted.

@RABEL222,
He has said that he is too old to change it and that American can't be improved no matter what anyway, or words to that same effect. He doesn't want to move, so the only choice is to ignore it or get on here day after day griping about the government of the US. If those were my choices, I would opt for ignoring it and find something else more soothing to my soul.

@cicerone imposter,
To misquote Orwell some people's speech is freer than others. If you use your free speech to do something other than whistle Yankee Doodle Dandy, God help you. I think you're right, the muckrakers have done more to protect freedom than the flagwavers who tell us to be more trusting and less critical.

No amount of Frank's platitudes will convince me that the United States Government in general and the CIA specifically, is benign. There's too much evidence to the contrary.

Actually, NO.

I am sure the two guys who have questioned my courage know to whom it was directed.

Right. And the others have their safety and their kids safety in mind. They are afraid...they are exhibiting fear. Rational fear. No problem with that.

As I have mentioned many times, Izzy, I do not view videos posted here. If a person has something to say...I would like them to say it.

If you actually think that...I have to ask: What world do you live in?

No one here in America seems to be very quiet about bad-mouthing the government...and none of you people seem to have any trouble bad-mouthing it either.

It seems to be one of the most popular things anyone does on the planet.

So...what is your "God help you" about?

Well, I certainly have not told anyone to be more trusting...and I have not done any flag waving at all.

In a way I guess I am asking for a bit less criticism...especially from people like ci, who seems, until very recently, to mouth off against the United States in damn near every post on politics.

And yeah...I think it is appropriate to do so...because the US is not some monster polluting the Earth no matter how much you or ci or Olivier might want to imagine us to be.

We have problems...but we still act with a lot more restraint than most super powers have acted throughout history. I sure as hell wouldn't have wanted some of the Roman Emperors or some of the English or French kings to have had the kinds of power we have right now...because many (perhaps most) places on this planet would now be uninhabitable.

I have never said our government is benign, Izzy. I have said that our government...IS OUR GOVERNMENT.

WE THE PEOPLE elected the people who comprise (or appoint) the government.

WE ARE THE GOVERNMENT.

There are no platitudes there. It is simply a statement of fact.

If you or ci or Olivier hate our government...you hate us.

Personally, I do not return the hate. I love ya, Izzy...and I love England.

@Frank Apisa,
I'm not transcripting a whole documentary. I'm not Reasoning Logic, I don't get nasty when people don't watch videos, but it was just 4 minutes long, and gave a very good taste as to what the whole documentary is about. As a critic of Republican Neo Cons I thought you might be interested.

This is from Wiki.
Quote:
The Power of Nightmares, subtitled The Rise of the Politics of Fear, is a BBC documentary film series, written and produced by Adam Curtis. Its three one-hour parts consist mostly of a montage of archive footage with Curtis's narration. The series was first broadcast in the United Kingdom in late 2004 and has subsequently been broadcast in multiple countries and shown in several film festivals, including the 2005 Cannes Film Festival.

The films compare the rise of the Neo-Conservative movement in the United States and the radical Islamist movement, making comparisons on their origins and claiming similarities between the two. More controversially, it argues that the threat of radical Islamism as a massive, sinister organised force of destruction, specifically in the form of al-Qaeda, is a myth perpetrated by politicians in many countries—and particularly American Neo-Conservatives—in an attempt to unite and inspire their people following the failure of earlier, more utopian ideologies.

The Power of Nightmares has been praised by film critics in both Britain and the United States. Its message and content have also been the subject of various critiques and criticisms from conservatives and progressives.
