You don't spy on friends, especially not on "great friends".
And since you want more spying against/in Germany ...

But there you are wrong.

We are great friends...and we do spy on you...and you spy on us.

The spying is not a determinant of whether or not we are friends or great friends.

Try to finally grasp that...because it is important.

@Frank Apisa,
WE (and that really is nearly 100% of) Germans don't like and want being spied on us.

No matter how much you like it.

Here is my position:

WE ARE GOING TO SPY ON YOU...and most likely you are going to spy on us. If you decide not to spy on us...WE ARE GOING TO SPY ON YOU ANYWAY.

The spying is going to continue.

Spying goes on...and friends can get past it.

That is what I think we should do...get past it. Work together on issues that confront us both...and which are better handled as partners.

You position, Walter, seems to be that if spying continues...we ought to abandon our relationship.

I think that is nuts.

And I think cooler heads than yours in both the US and Germany will prevail.

Yes...I value my opinion, ci. Most people do value their own opinions.

Not sure why you do not value yours...but that is your problem.

I most assuredly did...MANY, MANY TIMES.

But what is your point here?

@Walter Hinteler,
Why don't you just tell Frank the truth, Walter, instead of this endless waltz? Describe to him how the USA has been the equivalent of the worst of the Nazis, not for a short period of time but for the USA's entire existence. There's voluminous information documenting it.

What I said was quite clearly stated...and certainly does not need clarification from someone like you, ci.

Those "cooler heads" most certainly live in another country than mine.

I do think that spying among friends is a tabu. Especially between "great friends".

@Walter Hinteler,
I do think as well that it will go on.
And since it was announced that we might do so, too - that cetainly will be the beginning of a very different kind of "friendship".

Fine...except that it is a fact of life.

But if you are so sure we should not be friends...do your best to destroy the relationship.

We'll see who comes out the worse for that.

I can't remember how often I wrote it in this thread: I'm not a native American-English speaker. So please excuse that I wrote something meaning "I am sure that the USA and Germany should not be friends".
I neither intended to write such nor do and did I think so.

@Walter Hinteler,
I don't remember you ever writing such a statement, so it seems it's up to Frank to cut and paste from any of your posts to prove his point.

Then you must be saying what I am saying: Spying will go on...we will remain friends...and let's put this all behind us before it becomes so contentious that we do severe relations.

Great. Glad you finally see things my way.
