@Frank Apisa,
Yup, I'm a "grade-schooler." Any more insults? Keep em coming. It proves your inability to respect anybody else's intelligence and opinion. You have to belittle everybody to keep your ego from crumbling.

@Walter Hinteler,
Why would Merkal being GDR (thanks) be the reason her emails were opened?

@revelette2,
You'll have to ask the NSA about that.

For you to talk about insult considering the huge quantity of insults you regularly hurl...is so laughable...I don't even need the clowns here, ci.

Is that why you do it...to keep your ego from crumbling?

You have no ego...so there is no danger.

Can't tell you how happy I am that you are no longer doing that silly pretense of ignoring me. You are fun to have around.

Her phone was hacked, over a couple of years, since 2002.
It was done by the (according to German laws) illegal station of the NSA's Special Collection Service in the US-embassy Berlin.

Merkel has German-Polish ancestry, she and her parents moved from Hamburg to the GDR in 1954 (her father got a parish there from the Evangelical Church of Berlin-Brandenburg), she had been a member of the Communist youth organisations, wasn't a member of any of the critical circles ... All that might well be suspicious for some in the USA.

In an interview with DW, the German government's new transatlantic coordinator, Jürgen Hardt, calls for more transparency in TTIP negotiations with the US and explains why Edward Snowden cannot be questioned in Germany.

Most of the controversy over whether to question Snowden; how to question him; and where to question him...

...apparently has become more political theater in German than anything else.

There will be less learned to help Germany prevent things like this from happening in the future...than help certain German politicians look good to the people to whom they want to look good.

It is theater.

Since Snowden says that he will not reveal secrets from Russia, and will not come to Germany without a firm deal on where he is to live, which Germany refuses to provide. This video questioning will of the caliber "how is the food over there?" and " what is your favorite color?"

Not here where it is a huge problem. Cultural/political and legal differences, obviously.

@Walter Hinteler,
It might be, but from what I gather, we pretty well spy on all the leaders of our allies and foes alike, so, maybe it wasn't really personal.

Oh! That hasn't been published here. We only got those names mentioned in the Snowden documents.

@Olivier5,
Not only that, it's offensive. There's a thing called trust. If the US can't trust our allies, they in turn should not trust us. Those kind of relationships are fickle and not worth it for much of anything.

Hell the US government is paying people to play online games and hang around chat rooms to see if the chat rooms are being used as communication links by terrorists.

Somehow that does not sound like the most efficient means to monitor terrorists cells.

Right!

No German politician would lie to the citizenry in the interest of theater!

Walter...c'mon.

At least acknowledge it to be a possibility.

You mean, I should acknowledge that Merkel knew her phone was hacked, that our parliament was playing theater, the committees are faked and our constitution and laws are phantoms?

Okay, for peace sake!

@Walter Hinteler,
Yeah, don't you get it? Since all countries kill and have killed, it should be an accepted fact of life. Otherwise, we are all naive to believe we can trust our allies.
