@revelette2,
You mean, it was kind of known that the USA spied on heads of friendly governments and citizens of allies?

@Walter Hinteler,
No, that wasn't what I meant, at least from my point of view, I admit, I never gave it a thought one way or another. I was speaking of after 9/11 a lot of changes were made in the US about the US and/or terrorist suspects regarding surveillance and other related issues.

@revelette2,
OK. I really think that Merkel was spied on because she's from the former GDR. Our emails etc - that certainly can be 9/11 related.

Revelette...

...there are still people who do not realize that the US...and damn near every other country with the capability to do it...almost certainly spies on allies...and, to a much larger degree than most want to acknowledge...on its own citizens.

The police car hidden alongside the road in a speed trap area...IS SPYING ON CITIZENS.

The signs exhorting travelers to report suspicious activities...IS SPYING ON CITIZENS.

Frisking people entering a boarding area of an airport...IS SPYING ON CITIZENS.

The world changes. Now we carry phones with us everywhere...where a few years ago we had to search for a working pay phone when needed. (Poor Clark Kent!)

@Walter Hinteler,
I confess, I don't know what GDR is, I can certainly look it up, I also don't know for sure if you are engaging in satire or being serious. In any event, I thought there was good relations between Merkel and the US, for that matter between the president of Mexico (wasn't his email's spied on by us as well?) so I am not sure why we spied on ya'll. I guess they wanted to know how Merkel was leaning on certain subjects and felt it was ok to do. They thought wrong as certainly the price they have paid since snowden ratted them out wasn't worth any information they may have gained.

Indeed. There are quite a lot ... who that what is done to be grounded on a legal basis.

All that is done legally, and by the police, not by secret/intelligence services. At least here in Germany.

'GDR' is "German Democratic Republic". And I was/am serious.

That's very sensible revel. I've never thought about such a matter before and now that you have caused me to do so it took me about a micro-second to decide that I am not clairvoyant in any way, shape or form because all the bookies haven't been cleaned out yet.

Continue to demand your right to be naive, Walter....

Actually, I'm not alone but with about 80% of our nation, our parliament, the EU-parliament, our government, the EU-commission ...

@Walter Hinteler,
Yes Walt but the allies of the past were those, in Larkin's words--

"Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another’s throats."

Now we have various bodies to mediate between allies much like the Church was required in the old days to mediate, as best it could, between all the tin-pot kings and queens in their enclaves.

But how a lady is prepared to be in the same room with somebody who has been tapping her phone beats me. It's just so ungallant as to be unimaginable outside of a misogynist's charter. A lot worse than when that ignorant Aussie P.M. had the effrontery to touch our Queen on the back pretending he was only helping her. And that was very bad form.

Well...then you can all be part of the problem.

Sounds to me as though with all that help....the "problem" will prevail.

No they don't because the spying shows they are not proper allies.

Apisa is defining words for us. Again. Intellectually it might be compared to a baby being rocked in its cradle by the night nurse. There is no danger when you define words to fit your argument. Logically it is impossible to lose an argument. That's why Apisa uses the silly method. He would **** himself if he lost an argument. He can even pretend that the ball and chain he wears is a mark of excellence.

@spendius,
Anybody who accepts Apisa's definition of "allies" has no alternative but to agree with him. The position is unassailable as with all his other positions where the meanings of the words are chosen to fit.

I thought it was pretty good!

And just using LOL as often as you do makes you look like a grade schooler. Try using emoticons, ci.
