@spendius,
This thread seems to have splintered off in different tracks than the one intended.

However, I read the piece you posted a link to. It was interesting. I have a question though for you. If you find the endless news reporting to be the suppliers to addicted followers so to speak, why then do you come to a political board to discuss political events reported in the news?

@Frank Apisa,
You're entitled to your opinion, but the dumbing down of the US is a well known evolution. It's made on purpose of course, with the idea that poor people shouldn't have too much education, otherwise they can make informed political choices.

So the point is not the stupidity -- that's a mean to an end -- as much as it is the contempt for the rest of the world.

France or the UK never created a world economic crisis just because some bankers in Paris wanted more cocaine and more whores, which is what happened in 2008 when Wall Street, having dupe Washington for years, screwed up the entire world economy just because of greed. Millions plunged in poverty as a result but the filthy rich bankers could receive their bonuses, thank Gowd.

Neither France nor the UK ever denied sound scientific evidence about the future of mankind, just because a few petro-punks wanted to keep making Dow at the same rhythm as before, without a though for their social responsibility...

They are world predators, and they own your republic. They own you. That's why you speak like this: you're a good valet of your corrupt dominant class.

To try to raise the level of debate to where it ought to be.

I would go a little further than Mr Siegel does. We are now in a situation in which we are both the subject and the object of art. With no God to consider it is inevitable.

You are getting further and further into delusion, Olivier. Is the pressure getting to you?

Even stupid people can make informed political choices. But there is no dumbing down going on. You just want to think that about America. Hey...if it makes your life worth living, go for it.

I have no contempt for the rest of the world...and I suspect most Americans don't. But you certainly have lots of contempt for us, Olivier. You might want to consider some professional help for that.

France and Great Britain did plenty of very reprehensible things during their glory years, Olivier...just as the US has done. I suspect most of your indignation, though, has to do with the fact that we are on top for the moment...and you guys are not. Soon, China will edge us out as the top dog...and you will have to change your silly hatred and envy on to them.

"They" is it?

I am not owned by anyone, Olivier...and I am in control of my self.

You, on the other hand, seem to be out-of-control.

Thanks for entertaining me with it! Wink

@Frank Apisa,
Are Americans dumb? No, it's the inequality, stupid

The US and UK have pitifully low OECD test scores. They are also the countries with some of the greatest inequality

http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/oct/09/americans-dumb-oecd-study-test-scores

Are Americans dumb? This is a question that has been debated by philosophers, begrudging foreigners and late night TV talk show hosts for decades. Anyone who has ever watched the Tonight Show's "Jaywalking" segment in which host Jay Leno stops random passersby and asks them rudimentary questions like "What is Julius Caesar famous for?" (Answer: "Um, is it the salad?") might already have made their minds up on this issue. But for those of you who prefer to reserve judgement until definitive proof is on hand, then I'm afraid I have some depressing news. America does indeed have a problem in the smarts department and it appears to be getting worse, not better.

What absolutely incredulous nonsense. You are owned body soul and mind by the propaganda on which you were raised.

I do so understand why nobody found Lee Siegel's article in the New Yorker to be interesting.

Not sure I agree that this is such a new phenomenon. Literature and the press have always been playing with one another. Many of the great novels of the 19th century were first serialised in newspapers before being published as books, for instance. Also, the move towards auto-biography as opposed to fiction is a trend that started in comic books about a decade ago, eg with Mauss by Art Speigelman.

Because you know yourself better than anyone else, Olivier...so it should not surprise you at all that your posts have no substance to them.

You might do better if you concentrated on whether or not Snowden is a dummy (the subject of the thread) rather than your obsession with me.

Not saying it would be better, but it certainly is worth a try on your part. Wink

I have reservations but the film or TV versions of some books are becoming "the" interpretation. And most of them miss the point.

I agree with this--

Quote:
There have been few, if any, events in American public life that match the ethical density of recent public controversies. This is hardly because life has become more ethically complicated. Rather, falling boundaries between private and public, an old morality increasingly muddled by new laws and new technology, and the dominance of a no-holds-barred media, have made moral conundrums that once never happened, or touched the lives of only a few people, the daily fare of millions.

@Frank Apisa,
And you might do better if, instead of playing Dr Freud with posters, you'd actually say something about the issues they are discussing. Even better, you could give those issues a thought or two... You know, try and see if perhaps they have a point? Ain't gona kill you and you would be a better poster as a result.
