I can only think it must mean that the manufacturer is obliged to give it away--one assumes it doesn't sell well.

award = give

therefore awarded = given

sort of like a prize or medal. Certainly freely given.

It might have been a Chrysler nitro, sorry not familiar with the vehicle.
