this appeared in another thread

Are you describing people trying to get into a train? If so, it should be "Only a few people got onto (or off of if you meant to say they were leaving) the train, and even fewer were getting on."

discuss off of for me.

It drives me crazy however the person posting it seems to speak with some authority when it come to english language.

Hello all!

Long time since I've been on this thread and the acronym piece made me think of one of my favourites:

BOBFOC

for those of you who understand cockney "dodgy boat" might help you work out its meaning!

On a more serious note - I personally find the scrambled lettering of the text a brilliant metaphor for how it is that people so often misunderstand one another because they are ONLY listening to selected parts of what someone is telling them.

This happens on forums threads all the time. People will register in their mind only a few 'key' words while dismissing all the rest as irrelevant extra baggage.

Leftwingers and God-Botherers are particularly prone to this self-induced lapse of comprehension.

Write a few 'conservative' comments and more than likely your entire thesis will be dismissed with nothing more intelligent than emotive outbursts along the lines of NAZI!![/i][/size].... FASCIST!![/i].... SKIN-HEAD!![/i]

Most people are very poor listeners.. picking up on only those words and phrases which have emotional significance for them.

Two hundred pages without any evidence of Godwin's Law, and someone comes along and demonstrates it on the flimsiest of pretexts.

Setanta - I see you're an admirer of Mark Twain's wise insights.

That creature looks to me like a cat that's swallowed a bird, or perhaps the other way round.

Is it a photographically-achieved hybrid? Hi bird?

Well, McTag, truth be known this Tawny owl was diagnosed by vets as being as drunk as a skunk on some ripe plums he'd found in the nearby orchards... (or whatever).

Here we see him slowly recovering from a massive hang-over... before finally being released back into the wilds.
