@JPB,
Wow!

I fell in love with Cape May NJ this summer, hope it will emerge from this more or less fine. (And everywhere else of course.)

@JPB,
Where was that taken? I'm really glad I don't live on the coast right now.

Any why is the person taking the picture still in the house (probably too late to leave now).

SOJO 104.9fm shared this photograph from a listener in Brigantine,NJ, showing storm surge flooding above this person's patio door.

Coastal NJ and MD are getting nailed by the surge.

@Cycloptichorn,
No, we're high and dry in New Orleans. Those who poo-poo the hype of a Cat 1 storm always seem to discount the potential of the storm surge. This baby's still 200 miles off shore.

In NYC, its 11:53AM and all is well.
Its cool outside, with the wind a little more energetic and a fine, airborne mist.

@OmSigDAVID,
I tried beach-net to view some web cams of the Delaware Coast. The whole area is mostly underwater and the dunes seem to be GONE

I am living in my whole house,
but I love my finished basement (well-equipped) and spend a lot of time therein.

NBC just reported the HMS Bounty has sunk off the North Carolina coast. 14 rescued - 2 missing. The Bounty was to dock at the Pier in early November. What a huge loss! This ship was docked at the pier for many years. It was used in the MGM film Mutiny on The Bounty. Sad day!

14 rescued, 2 missing from HMS Bounty off N.C. coast

Edit: Sorry Billrm I just notice you already posted this story.

@ossobuco,
She's entered the warm waters of the Gulf Stream and appears to be intensifying. Pressure is dropping and winds are increasing. She may be upgraded to a Cat 2 at the 1:00 update.

Quote:
Breaking Weather News: Aircraft reconnaissance aircraft currently flying into Hurricane Sandy is reporting rapid pressure drops which means rapid intensification is occurring. They are indicating 99mph sustained winds at the surface of the storm, which would make this a strong Category 2 hurricane.

@ossobuco,
that is a truly freakish looking storm track

with the revised track, it looks like we'll just get more and more rain from the edges but my hometown (where hamburgboy is) will now be under the centre late Wednesday - the retirement home is within the flood plain there - I hope they've made plans for the residents

Latest NOAA bulletin from the Philadelphia/Mt Holly NJ forecast center. http://www.erh.noaa.gov/phi/briefing/packages/current_briefing.pdf

Quote:
• Hurricane Sandy has started to have a severe impact on our region and will continue to do so over the next several days:
• Strong damaging sustained winds 40 to 55 mph over a prolonged period of time (24 to 48 hours), with gusts over 75 mph. Strongest winds are expected south and east of the I-95 corridor.
• Extremely heavy rainfall.
• Major to record inland flooding along streams and rivers.
• Major to record coastal flooding. The full moon on October 29 just makes things worse.
• Hurricane Sandy will strike our region directly. Options for it to miss us have run out. This is our worst case scenario.
• Next briefing package will be issued by 600 PM EDT on Monday, October 29

From Jeff Masters at the Weather Underground.

Quote:
"...the destructive potential of the storm surge was record high: 5.8 on a scale of 0 to 6. This is a higher destructive potential than any hurricane observed since 1969, including Category 5 storms like Katrina, Rita, Wilma, Camille, and Andrew. The previous highest destructive potential for storm surge was 5.6 on a scale of 0 to 6, set during Hurricane Isabel of 2003. Sandy's storm surge will be capable of overtopping the flood walls in Manhattan, which are only five feet above mean sea level..."
