We are still here. Rain has been light but steady and winds are gusty not high. I expected the high winds to arrive between 4 - 9 AM, that's now pushed to around 8 PM. Gives me more time to bake and store things for the utility co. now guaranteed outage. The storm is moving slowly but once it gets here it's expected to hang around 24 hours. Mr. glitterbag checked the rain guage and said we got about 2.8" since last night. Not bad at all since its been light and steady. So far so good. Utility co. said once we lose power they can only start using bucket trucks when the wind speed is less than 20mph (I think thats the correct number, I heard that last night and I was so tired my ability to commprehend adult info had sunken to about 20 miles over our little pimply friends patched quilt of intellectual understanding). You can imagine the state I was in. Feeling too cocky right now, will post later after I take care of a few matters. New wind predictions for our region as high as 85-95, but I'm hoping they are talking gusts. Some word also about raising the Catagory of Sandy to II.

Anyone know how Roberta is doing? She faired pretty well during the last hurricane, but this one has me concerned for her well-being.

Just hear that one of my home towns where I grow up in Seaside Heights NJ that 25 percents of it citizens are riding out the storm in place government orders or no government orders.

The beach is underwater and or gone and the boardwalk is being hit by waves directly.

Otherwise the town is doing ok at the moment.

@ossobuco,
and the rain has started again here

odd to have the edges of an Atlantic storm hit us toward the centre of the continent - north of a Great Lake

ahhh just looked on CNN - we're just at the top end of a storm cell coming due north from Pittsburgh

looks like there may be snow in parts of Virginia - is that possible?

@ehBeth,
The storm is being called a "Hybrid" and not a hurricane. A hurricane achieves its energy from a warm water heat sink and returns the energy in the form of the storm. A Noreaster is a storm that achieves its energy froma heat GRAFIENT from both land and sea. This storm is leaving its hurricane status and is becoming a powerful Noreaster and the transitioning is where the term "Hybrid" is being used/
I heard that on the morning tlk show on PBS and its really meant for weather geeks who get off chasingthunderstorms
The only difference between a Noreaster nd a hurricane is that noreasters dont spawn tornadoes
ANYBODY Give a ****?

apparently yes

Quote:
Forecasters said Sandy was likely to collide with a cold front and spawn a "superstorm" that could generate flash floods, snowstorms and massive power outages from North Carolina to Maine.

<snip>

The predicted impact extends beyond the East Coast. Wave heights in Lake Michigan could reach 28 feet Monday night and 31 feet by Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.

Not sure where she is, exactly. Seeing reports of early flooding in NYC Zone A.

@JPB,
Well, there's a website I don't understand. What are the brown spaces by the water? Is that supposed to be red? What are the red orange dots towards the interior of manhattan? Zone what? Then the tan spaces? What are the green spaces - zone C? as in chartreuse? I'm thinking she's in a white space, have to check.
But, winds can be hard on a person.
