@Mame,
If you get to Harlem, you might want to try lunch at Sylvia's Restaurant--a very, very well known landmark for soul food. I haven't eaten there, but it's one place I would really like to try one day.

You might want to make a lunch reservation in advance.
328 Lenox Ave New York, NY 10027 Tel: (212) 996-0660

Between 10/1--10/15 they are one of several Harlem restaurants offering a special prix fixe lunch for $20. That's a good deal compared to their regular prices.
http://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20120928/central-harlem/red-rooster-sylvias-lineup-for-harlem-restaurant-retail-week

But you need to print out this coupon to get the special price--and maybe one of the NYC A2K people can print it out for you and give it to you if you want to try Sylvia's.

One place I have been to, and love, is the Carnegie Deli. That one is Jewish soul food. Yum. Smile Roberta can probably give you suggestions on what to order, if you need any.
7th Avenue at 55th Street

I hope you have a wonderful time.

@firefly,
If she goes to the Carnegie today, she still won't be hungry for dinner tomorrow at 7. Mr. Green

Did I mention not to to buy any food IN the museums?

Don't buy any food IN the museums.

Faint from hunger first.

Walk East a block to Madison, plenty of places to grab a lunch.

@Joe Nation,
How do you get to Carnegie Diner? Fast, fast, fast!
Okay, that didn't work out that well as it did in me noggin.

I've never been but in the past couple of years, I've read that their quality has Plummeted to even below Tourist Attraction food. I'd skip Sylvias. It seems they just microwave their food these days.

@tsarstepan,
The most recent reviews for Sylvia's are quite good.

Dunno.

In any case, it's a great city and a good time of year to visit. I need to go north of 20th street more, but I'm somehow tethered to Union Square.

@ehBeth,
The name I know in Harlem is Samuelson- I've no view, except that he has press.
http://www.marcussamuelsson.com/

Back a long time ago, I used to love the bbq at Marie's Hungry Me, run by a UPS driver's mom, in south LA. I'd look for those kind of places.

Truth is, I tend to eat at what is near at the time. I sometimes know by review on that, but my hole in the wall instincts are good.

@ossobuco,
Marcus is insanely wonderful. I'd love to score a reservation to anywhere he is cooking. I've never had a full meal by him, but scored a ticket to a food show that was taped in Toronto about five years ago. Just one tiny sample was <thud> worthy.

omigawd, I just checked - it was nine years ago. Memorable in any case.

Both of my phones are dead--no dial tone. I can't make the reservation.

Somebody else please do ii:

Use my name so we'll know whom to ask for.

Thanks.

Off to investigate the phone problem.

The Carnegie Deli ain't bad. I prefer the Second Avenue Deli. Not the one on the upper east side. The one in midtown.

Marcus Samuelson's Harlem Restaurant is the Red Rooster. It's got a great reputation, but it's pricey. Check it out before you schlep.
