You obviously haven't met many black Americans. They are really not so different from white Amercians. Some are great people and some are assholes.
Just like Brits of any color. You, for instance are an asshole and yet I have met many Brits who I like and respect very much.
Go figure.
In my opinion, the difference is that their "culture" is known throughout the entire U.S., and many Americans can function in two cultures, the mainstream white culture (by region), and their own culture. Blacks though have promulgated their Black culture, to the point that for some white people it is the culture that is their main culture (i.e., the hip-hop culture). Very few Americans, other than in some urban centers understand when someone from NYC calls another person a "schmuck."
And, due to their still having a comparatively large "under-class," they are different, in that they are not jettisoning their under-class, as other American demographics have done in the past. They seem to have a loyalty to their own, beyond the loyalty, perhaps found amongst the old division of Catholics and Protestants.
Personally, I just find Blacks sort of boring, since I've observed them so long in NYC, and their culture is really the Carolinas culture they took with them, when they came north. The problem was that their families sometimes disintegrated in the North.
Now, give me some white "transplants" to observe, from middle America, and I can be amused for hours. They can be so adorable in their attempt to be New Yorkers.
