The US has had no need to "protect" itself. The US has constantly created these boogeymen to keep fools like yourself slavering for more illegal invasions. It's all been a gigantic lie, a hoax of epic proportion. You're not alone. There are many many fools even here at A2K.
Read the following. It's short and to the point. It doesn't require of you that you stop being grateful that you live in the US. All it requires from you, from any thinking person, is that you stop believing the vast torrent of propaganda that you are fed daily by the US government and its media arm, aka the US media.
