It is, indeed, love again for osso. Smile

I'm really enjoying hearing about Katy, and how the two of you are getting to know each other.

How did the two of you connect with each other? Where was she before you came into her life?

Very mysterious, osso.
I'm starting to think maybe you acquired Katy by foul means! Wink Smile

A stolen dog story for your entertainment: many years ago, an animal-loving friend used to regularly pass a house on his way home from work, where this sad, utterly miserable dog was always tied up.
One day, the dog's plight finally got the better of my friend .... so he jumped the fence & he stole her & took her home!
She (the dog) became Susie.
From there on she lived the most doted-on life imaginable. I'm sure Susie thought all her Christmases had come at once!
When my friend & his wife moved to England some years later, Susie went with them. She lived to an amazing old age (in dog years) & they were broken-hearted when she died, years later.
But what a fantastic life she'd had!

Of course, I am in no way suggesting that you did anything like my friend did in acquiring Katy. But I thought you'd enjoy hearing Susie's story. Smile

@msolga,
Neither foul, nor fowl...

I think our cat, Cinque, was stolen by a possible malefactor - we thought later - who used to pet her on our front fence every sunday after mass. She went missing on a sunday and we didn't see that guy again for a couple of years.

update: Katy disdained food until 1:30 pm, when it suddenly gained interest (whew).

Sighing, osso. Katy sounds like a wonderful dog. Not a big barker--an appropriate barker. You're a good mother. Not giving her your doggy bag.

I'm a watcher and a follower of Cesar Milan (the dog whisperer). Based on that, I feel compelled to say that Katy needs exercise. Some walking.

OK, I'm being a pain in the ass and you can tell me to mind my own business. I couldn't help myself. I worry.

Still sighing. And happy for the both of you. And me once removed.

@Roberta,
Yes, I'm all for the exercise. Just getting set up. We see the vet tomorrow, then I'll hit the pet store with an eye to the right food choices and one or two items re controlling her on long walks where we might run into a confrontational situation with another dog. I get that the key control is me and my commands, but the right halter/double chain/gentle leader would be a help.

@Montgomery,
Welcome to a2k, Montgomery. I know how you feel. The dog in my avatar is a dog I loved who died five years ago. At this point I'm not sad about that and seeing his photo has been a happy thing. Once I have a photo of Katy, I'll make that my avatar, at least for a while.

During this past five years when I haven't had a dog, I've enjoyed seeing other people's dogs, or reading about dogs.

@ossobuco,
For my dog I use the chest harness and it made all the difference in the world. It takes all the pressure of his neck.

@Ragman,
Yeah, that's what worked best with Pacco and I am pretty sure he preferred it to the next stuff... how could he not? I could probably even get Pacc's old harness to work, as the dimensions are expandable - but would prefer a somewhat beefier 'cording' (whatever one calls the band part). Gotta take the girl's girth measurements! Well, I'll do that and look online before I go to Petco or wherever.

@ossobuco,
The shopping for the right harness is simpler than I had expected. The straps for bigger dogs are wider as well as longer so that when you go to Petco or wherever, all you need to know is an approximate weight the dog is now. The wider the straps are, the less pressure on the dog. The same thing with the lead that accompanies it! Much easier on your hands, too.

My dog's harness is called Easy Walk, FWIW. The lead part is one inch wide..and the harness straps are about 3/4 inch wide.

For example, I bought my dog's harness when he was 52 lbs. Now that he's 62 lbs, I adjusted the length of the straps from the medium-large sized dog to whatever size he is now. I just had to make sure that his harness was snug without being too tight and restrictive. As long so he couldn't pull it off as he backed away.

It was surprisingly easy for me, the new-to-doggy-owner.

@Ragman,
Katy is bigger than Pacco so I figure the next size up will make sense. I think she'll need something that can be sized down (heaven forfend up, as she has a portly midsection). I do remember that the harness was relatively easy to figure out. Won't know her weight until the doc's..

@ossobuco,
It's been awhile. I may have bought the lead separately, but it is one inch wide. and has a sliding...hard black rubber or vinyl ergonomicly designed ... grip for the hand besides the looped end of the lead which wraps over your wrist.

@Ragman,
Veddy interesting. I've been using P's old sturdy leather lead, also about an inch wide, but might like the kind you're talking about.

@ossobuco,
yeah..they have webby sort of elasticity-expandability that you see on luggage so they stretch a little bit. You know what I mean? I like them a little better than leather for long lasting quality. Also when they get wet they stay lighter and are very durable. Less likely to get chewed on or pick up smells, too.
