@roger,
No - Pacco had his teeth cleaned just after I got him from the humane society, and after they were cleaned, a big deal, the vets decided he was closer to six years old than nine. I had him seven years and the vets never suggested cleaning again and they always checked his teeth.

Cleaning involves anaesthesia, and I'm not for anaesthesia for an elder dog except in great need.

Anyway, that's primarily what the bones are about, giving the teeth a workout.
Rags, I'll look into those nyla bones too.
On beef bones, cooked as opposed to the not cooked kind you get in pet stores, I read a bunch of sites on that and the comments were all over the place. I was interested, re perhaps giving Katy some of my baked beef rib bones. I ended up not.

@ossobuco,
[Edit : Just read your comment. Smart idea to avoid real beef bones:]

Ok. my vet advises NOT to give the dog animal bones - as any piece can splinter and cause damage. Though, I've done this before with no ill effects..I guess the risk is too great that it can backfire. My friend who had owned my dog before was a trained MD with a set of forceps he kept handy at all timesfor Brady and all the other 4 BC dogs.

So for feeding a dog real bones, I will not do it any longer and wouldn't recommend it, either.

Vet and pet supply stores sell 'fake', nutritional bones that have protein etc. They are well tolerated and enjoyed by pooches.

Also, as I previously wrote, there are those Nyla bones at pet stores or at vets..which dogs like to work their chewing need on that don't wear the teeth or wear out too soon.

Vet tooth cleaning procedure is out due to my finances PLUS. At age 7, I will not put him under anesthesia unless it's an emergency or dental condition that warrants it.

I do pledge to brush his teeth nightly with the finger-puppet toothbrush. He smiles afterwards now that I returned to doing it. I've had him examined and only the rear teeth have a little buildup bout nothing alarming.

@Ragman,
And, while in the kitchen, I checked out my tray with this and that dog stuff and decided it's time for me to approach toothbrushing with her. I don't have the puppet thing, just a long seemingly light brush. We'll see, but I won't try until I am wide awake and chipper in the morning.

@Ragman,
I wonder what Cowdoc thinks. I hate to bother him about this. And, of course, PatioDog, another guy I don't want to bother with this day to day stuff, while liking them both a lot for other reasons.

Meantime, Roger, Cdoc pm'd he'll be here in late February. I fantasize he can meet Katy with us at a Flying Star. It would be for his own good, as she promotes happiness.

@ossobuco,
I use to have to get my cats teeth cleaned, within six months I will have to take all three dogs in for a cleaning. I give them their milk bone dog bisques a couple times a day and never give them wet food, which helps, but they still have to be cleaned.

@ossobuco,
Of course she should be there, if only to promote happiness. This is why we call man "The rationalizing Animal".

@jcboy,
I agree, but there seems to be some concern about general anesthesia on elderly dogs. Like osso, I wish CowDoc or P'dog would drop in with an opinion.

@ossobuco,
Oh, as always in wintertime, my presence is highly dependent of road conditions and weather forcasts. Been lucky so far this year.

@roger,
That’s true, I remember when my cats were getting older the Vet said not to bring them in for another cleaning.

@jcboy,
I doubt that six months as a rule.

Anesthesia (american spelling, I like the britspelling) every six months?

Or do you just have the vet ply the toothbrush?

@ossobuco,
That's what my Vet recommended, said I should bring them in twice a year, if I wait longer there will be more tarter and then they charge more the longer it takes to remove it.

@roger,
Yes, you have..

For anyone reading, Roger lives about three and a half hours from Albuquerque, and in winter the road can be treacherous up the kazoo. Ok, wazoo.
In late spring, a totally gorgeous drive.

@jcboy,
I'm rolling eyes on this, jc.

Maybe vets in northern california didn't get the memo, but that is not common practice.

Queen of Romania trots back in fast today. In fact she changed her mind about wanting to pee once this a.m., when the winds were most vociferous. And then reversed herself, when need arose.

Well, I removed images from photobucket too fast. Pitter posted a thread about them charging for storage, and so on, which turned out to be a mistake. Anyway, I took some of my images off before I started to wait and see. The ones that mattered were the ones of Katy, but I just put them back - but they have different photobucket urls now, soooooooooo:

here they are again -

If that picture doesn't make me feel like grabbing her snout and giving her a good shake, I don't know what would.

PS: she likes it.

@Roberta,
She just told me she loves you too.
I knew you would be bummed if you saw the photos had disappeared (that was for about a half hour).
