@ossobuco,
[Edit :
Just read your comment. Smart idea to avoid real beef bones:]
Ok. my vet advises NOT to give the dog animal bones - as any piece can splinter and cause damage. Though, I've done this before with no ill effects..I guess the risk is too great that it can backfire. My friend who had owned my dog before was a trained MD with a set of forceps he kept handy at all timesfor Brady and all the other 4 BC dogs.
So for feeding a dog real bones, I will not do it any longer and wouldn't recommend it, either.
Vet and pet supply stores sell 'fake', nutritional bones that have protein etc. They are well tolerated and enjoyed by pooches.
Also, as I previously wrote, there are those Nyla bones at pet stores or at vets..which dogs like to work their chewing need on that don't wear the teeth or wear out too soon.
Vet tooth cleaning procedure is out due to my finances PLUS. At age 7, I will not put him under anesthesia unless it's an emergency or dental condition that warrants it.
I do pledge to brush his teeth nightly with the finger-puppet toothbrush. He smiles afterwards now that I returned to doing it. I've had him examined and only the rear teeth have a little buildup bout nothing alarming.
