@hawkeye10,
Youve got this festering bug up your ass about govt. Ill let you deal with that problem in your free time. Im bitching about the Weather Channel's hunt for ratings as theyve been taken over by the reality TV mindset.

@farmerman,
I stopped watching TWC two years ago. Couldn't stand the hype and hysteria.

Edit: although Brian Norcross knows his stuff.

CNN started the practice decades ago of putting their people in rain coats on the beach as storms roll in, letting the camera's roll as they play in the wind, NBC (owners since 2008) are only copying a well worn formula...

@farmerman,
I take a middle position. Based on the size of the wind field, the slow speed (13mph is very slow for an Atlantic seaboard storm), and the monthly tide cycles all leading towards powerful surge conditions and fresh water flooding, I think they were right to call for the evac of low-lying areas and announcing a plan two days in advance. After seeing first hand with Ike what a surge can do I think they did the prudent thing.

That said, however, I agree with you that TWC actually encourages people to stay by making celebrities out of idiots.

I'm not a big fan of the hype either, but if I could add a word of defense in their case...

I think the govt and the media are somewhat compelled to overblow everything because our society is so quick to blame them for any warnings they DIDN'T issue.

If they hype everything to the max, then when it's all said and done if "bad" stuff happens they can say they tried their best to warn the public. But woe unto any public entity that allows mother nature to affect the public without warning. They'll be hauled in front of congress for their lack of action. And can you imagine being accused of ineptitude by that bunch of idiots. I can't imagine anything more appalling.

Considering how Bush and his boy "Brownie" got roasted over Katrina, i'd be surprised if they didn't react this way.

@JPB,
I think that the govts reswponse has been very responsible cause they only have the FEMA and thWeather Channel to serve as primary data. TWC;s problem is the publsihing of these bogus graphix that show disaster zones in these garish colors and they do it with abandon.
I gotta admit that weve got TWC set as background in an inset picture on the Big TV. Theyve been filming this little dock thats been losing some wood on the end of the peir. To begion wioth, the damn thing was one of those sl;apdash rickety boat mooring piers where noone really designs em to be durable , they can rebuildby getting a marine piling guy to come in and driv several new posts after it blows over. However, TWC is making this like its major damage.

Govt makes decisions with data at hand. They regret it later. To do a major **** up as was done by FEMA during Katrina is something for which noone wishes to take credit.

@JPB,
Quote:
monthly tide cycles
Remember that lunar high tides are accompanied by lunar low tides too. SO, as its blowing up the copast (especially DEL BAY), its gponna come in at the monthly/daily LOW tides. That will give the tidal marshes lots of space to suck up water from heavy runnoffs and rains

@farmerman,
It looks like Beaufort saw a 3.5' surge at this morning's high tide (green line).

Which will send me down a crazy rant about tidal marshes and wetland destruction, so I'll give you a thumb up and leave it at that.

@Setanta,
yeah, there's blame enough to go around for all the over inflated hysteria, sad to say. My oldest daughter is in Greensboro so she's just out of any danger, and my next daughter, grandson and great grandson are in Lyynchburg Va so I'm sure they're okay. I haven't heard from Kylie but she lives about three miles down the road and will surely come here if something gets shitty, Stephen is sound asleep in his room. the only people in trouble are squinney and Seth who live right on the edge of Johnston County in Caswell County and living there for anyone not an Obama, democrat, liberal, socialist black, Mexican or any non white hater is enough danger in and of itself ... so they're not worried about Irene. I talked to them a few minutes ago and they have some fairly powerful wind and power is flickering on and off. News Flash ...just lost power for about 60 seconds which is weird because it's barely raining and the wind is barely blowing. From the window looks like maybe 25 MPH. I have three of those power strips with heavy internal battery power that would run the refrigerator and a couple of lamps at least and plenty of batteries.
I'm still planning to move to the beach and before I do I'll invest a thou or 2 in a good generator. When the ice storm took out the power in Raleigh a few years back we ran almost our entire 3200 square foot house off the generator I used to have for events, so I get the value of them.

Hope everyone will be all right.

And I'm back! Lost power from 4:30 to 9:30 AM, my backyard looks like a swamp and half of a formally beautiful 20 ft Bradford Pear is lying across my front yard but the roof seems to have held up well, there are no water stains on the interior ceilings and the roads are clear (at least where I live) so I'm calling it a win. Good luck to those north and thanks to those who sent good wishes.
