Maybe the Senate will vote to find a brain for JTT, that would be nice.

I read an AP article that is totally unrelated to DADT. I found it to be discouraging with regards to our military, and by extension our education system and other aspects our society.
> 23% of those who want to join the armed services fail the military entrance exam testing basic math skills, etc.
> 75% of those in the target market for recruitment (17-24 year olds) are not eligible because of physical unfitness (specifically obesity), a criminal record or no high school diploma, according to the Pentagon.
> As I understand the article, the military needs to recruit 15% of those in the 17-24 pool each year. That goal is being met now, but if/when the economy improves, they may have more trouble.

This would be the same Senate that hasn't done a thing about the various war criminals that have occupied the oval office, not to mention the war criminals that now numerous seats in its own house.

Given how yours has developed plugged into that toxic propaganda stream, I think I'll pass, thank you very much.

Would you care to post the text of the rulings of your bedroom court finding US presidents war criminals?

@BillRM,
Given how your brain has developed plugged into that toxic propaganda stream, it would be of no use.

Have you ever heard of Google and fact checking?

Interesting to me is to what degree Kirk seems to want to avoid internal GOP politics. He played his cards with a good poker face.

ya think? He has to meet on "some hiring and leasing discussions" and can't make it to stand behind the President as the bill is being signed.

Quote:
WASHINGTON -- Mark Kirk, the new Republican senator from Illinois, has said thanks, no thanks to an invitation from the White House to attend a Wednesday ceremony when President Barack Obama will sign into law a historic repeal of the ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in the military.

Kirk, 51, of Highland Park, who entered the Senate on Nov. 29, was one of eight Republicans to vote Saturday in favor of repealing the ban.

He is a commander in the Naval Reserve.

Kirk's spokeswoman Kate Dickens said it was unfortunate that the lawmaker could not attend. "We couldn't change his schedule from some hiring and leasing discussions" for offices, she explained.

The measure, the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010, will become law at a ceremony at the Interior Department at 8:15 a.m. Chicago time. Source

No real worry about that with the GOP in charge of the house for the next two years.

@realjohnboy,
realjohnboy,

I think the problem you cited is very real and, frankly, of long extent, though probably worsening. I recall that during the Vietnam years the military had to significantly lower its measured mental ability & learning standards in order to meet its requirements for numbers. I believe this is a reflection of the weakening of family structures and the continuing failure of our public schools over at least a generation and probably more. I believe that to reverse these trends we are going to have to depoliticize what has been called family values in this country and break the power of the American Federation of Teachers. In both cases the prospects for success look uncertain at best.

@georgeob1,
I think it's more a reflection of mass numbers of kids going into college than ever before, amassing debts that they then can't pay back, all in pursuit of what became the new American living standard... a mortgage for every family and a college diploma in every living room.

of course you do georgeob, and I believe the fast food industry is to blame as well as radiation from flat-screen t.v.'s and polyester clothing.

Obama signed the bill today. Whatever one thinks of the reality of gays serving in the military, they now have the legal right to do so without fear of expulsion.

@Cycloptichorn,
So now it goes to the DoD and they make an implementation plan and then have 60 days to do it right? What's the timeline from here?

I know this is going to be traumatic form some to know who the gay soldiers are that have been with them for years. I hope we have enough counselling resources for these poor souls.

Is it true that Slobbering Barney Frank is currently moonlighting at the local military recruitment office?

@sozobe,
YES, I truly believe that human/civil rights are the heart of "liberalism" and that "sillyism" found all too often in "liberal agendas" will take a back-seat to what's really meaningful.
