I don't want to hijack the thread, but I must respond to this. I was not presenting the apartments as a laughing matter, but rather as a way to illustrate why other people (especially Americans) should be grateful for their own living spaces. And by the way, two of my nieces are from China and my brother lived there for business for a number of years, so don't try and give me your crap about eastern cultures. Personally, I find you to be rather slow in understanding what people are trying to say and totally infantile in your view of relationships and the world. You belong in the same orgy of stupidity and cluelessness being promoted by Ionus and Hawkeye .

Your notes about chinese staring do not match others.

I’m so happy for you that you have overcome culture shock. That is a big achievement! However, I have some bad news for you. The only way to stop people from staring at you is to simply leave China. Sorry, but that is the painful truth. I agree with you. It is rude and discomforting but that is the way it is. Parents from your home country may teach their children not to stare at other people but not here. Often, parents just good ahead and have a good look with their children!

Do not let the stares bother you. Curiosity is the biggest reason why people stare at you. Do not forget that many people in China have never seen a foreigner much less been close to one. It is only natural that they would try to get a good look at you. Usually, I will give a friendly smile or simply stare back at them until they drop their gaze. Since they are staring at me, I think I have that right.

By the way, one of Robert Vance’s early posts on this website dealt with the issue of staring in China. The name of this entertaining article is simply The Chinese Stare.

If being stared at in China is your biggest problem then you really do not have much to worry about at all. Enjoy the attention and be friendly!

There was one activity that was frowned upon and finally banned. This ban gave us the Prohibition. Now the Prohibition was good stuff. It gave us organized crime and filled the silver screens with Al Capone and Scarface. There was Dillinger's being gunned down outside the restaurant which I visited. St Valentine now has something for lovers and gangsters with the massacre. Las Vegas wouldn't be there if it weren't for gangster Bugsy Siegal. It was the Mafia that brought in the Cotton Club that gave Duke Ellington and Lena Horne their breaks. Drinking is such a sin and we need to repeat that by banning staring.

@talk72000,
Just as drunk driving is worthy of action while drinking is fine, creepy, intense, in your face staring is worthy of action while the more run of the mill attention is not.

@engineer,
You got a blow tube or bag for drunk driving but do you have a test meter for staring.available? All you have is 'he said, she said'. In India you don't have these resources. All of this is moot as what is appropriate for Americans would not work in India. India is very poor and companies are cheap. You should visit some of the work places in India. See for your self. The workplace wouldn't meet your standard so you employee demands will be excessive. As spidergal mentioned it wasn't the staring that bothered her but the stalking.

@talk72000,
Spidergirl also mentioned that she has a very active HR organization that could handle the issue in a discrete manner. That seems to be what happened. Why would we create a vision of a poor, sad sweatshop when we've already been told that's not the case?

all these douchebags that got a problem with this, i.e. "well what if the guy just sort of, you know, was looking. spidergals ruining his LIFE!", feel that way because they are the same douchebags that do the creepy stare thing.

those types aren't prepared to be called on it, so resort to obscure hypothetical rational.

I haven't even read any of the newer posts on this thread, because it's just the same old **** being recycled.

face it creeps, you're just plain creepy, and your explanations just make you more so.

You know what I'd like?

To get the usual suspects as far as creep factor, in the same room for the evening with me, Mame, Lash, CJ (Yeah! especially CJ), um and I'm sure about 5 or 6 more ladies that I can't think of right now (forgive me ladies, if you feel your name should be on the list, then it is).

They wouldn't know how to deal with real women who know their minds.

Their balls would whither and drop off, thank God.

not shewolf though, she's a freak.

@chai2,
Yeah, I would tremble at the thought of being in the same room with Mame and Lash. Oh wait a moment, I have been in the same room with Mame and with Lash. Man, I was petrified. I've been singing castrato ever since.

I wasn't talking about staring in the post, Hawkeye. I was addressing Talks' post that accuses me of making fun of the living conditions in China. He felt the need to snoop about my old posts, and then in his usual inability to understand simple language, he makes accusations that are not true.

@chai2,
Yep... withering stares should do the trick quite nicely, Chai....

wilkinson sword tongue would give him a lashing!!

... wither away...

BYE THEN creep!

Don't you get it """talk"""" - it's not about what you think, it's how his creepy stares (saying that mildly - intense stare with a mind-f+ck attached to it) - to the point it actually did make Spidergal uncomfortable, almost fearful, second guessing her instincts, worrying about whether she may or may not be followed.

India IS a whole different culture - do you get that- it's not from a Bollywood movies... it's REAL LIFE and it's her life that was affected. She dealt with it professionally and calmly without having to put herself in danger. Well done her. I hope she will remain vigilant tho and still take precautions in case he's gone off into hiding for a bit.

There is a difference between a glance or the usual checking out a gal, and obviously, some women are more sensitive and some would never even notice... but ya know - Spidergal seems a pretty confident and strong wee lassie and can hold her own - if SHE thinks he's creepy - her instincts count. She has done the right thing IMO

Please """"talk""do try and listen to what people say instead of talking OVER them and their feelings and creating some fictional movie plot. It's terribly patronising and frustrating for the original poster who has not come here cussing or blindsiding people, and all "up herself" - she asked a simple question... try to respectfully answer and don't make out she's done something wrong. SHE HASN'T.

gosh....

Hey, baby. I feel your pain. We have to be cognizant of how our smoldering sensuality affects mortals... You know that heat you're packing, baby. Should register that hot stuff with the local US Embassy... (grins)

@chai2,
I'll pipe in again. I was stared at many times in Mexico, and less so but still some in Italy, older then. This kind of staring-looking is off topic, not what we (women and some men) are talking about.

There are fulgent posts that some of us women posting all hate being looked at. That's building a top hat over an ant, plain stupid.

Eyes that repeatedly bore are ******* scary.

@engineer,
That is where the jobs are disappearing. Make a call about any computer problems and you will get a call from Bangalore. Remember Bhopal? 4,000 or so people were killed from a US chemical company -Union Carbide corporation had a chemical mishap. Probably a case of underqualified worker involved. All those companies operate to escape strict US environmental standards.

Well **** me ! Thank God they didnt have women in the trenches in WWI...they might have been uncomfortable.

If you want the same protection you use to enjoy in the home now that you are in the workplace, go back to the kitchen and breed.
