@CowDoc,
I agree with Ragman, including that I have repulsion for the dog stuff.
I supposes it is a culture (the dog fighting) that one can be drawn into, given a certain take in one's upbringing on animals' place in the universe, but I especially hated, repulsion x2, knowing about the dog getting-rid-of process.

I don't know much about Bryant's behavior, so no comment, but on Woods, I also see him as having a somewhat martinet-ed upbringing, with a missed link for what marriage means - well, to many - and then an aura of privilege that can be found in sports, but not only sports. There are cultural issues here too, in that not everyone in the world buys the romantic aspect, with vows, to marriage.

edit - I just read Farmer's squib and Ragman's next comment, interesting, I can go along with that, the teaching time re the cultural respect for animals, and see that he is working at these matters. Whether he keeps up as a good qb or not, it seems real.

@CowDoc,
torture and respect - I don't find them comparable

the women could choose to walk away or continue in the relationships (and I don't know anything about the inner workings/rules of Bryant's/Wood's relationships to begin with)

the dogs had no way out

Come on Tico. That's no answer. It's way too trite. You need a violin to play tunes like that.

@ossobuco,
What about chicken factories and veal production units osso? They involve the deliberate ill-treatment of millions of animals all day long, everyday and with no end in sight so that a little money can be saved with which to buy powder puffs and ornamental candles. Have you seen fish caught in giant nets by the thousand? Have you seen mice caught in traps.

Are you sure your's and E's priorities are in proportion?

I did pretty terrible this weekend.

Seattle is apparently a hell of a lot better than I had given them credit for.

I was most surprised by the Jets-Miami game. Where the hell did this Jets passing attack come from??

I guess they finally got their front line together. Miami did OK versus the Jets in the run game - 4.9 ypc or so for Brown - but didn't stick with it. I also thought the Miami Wildcat plays were overcomplicated and overly sideways vs. a fast defense - they would have been better just doing a Zone Read or straight runs with Brown or Williams.

New Orleans Saints bringing in kicker John Carney for workout

Just a few hours after Garrett Hartley's badly missed 29-yard field-goal attempt cost the New Orleans Saints an overtime victory over the NFC South division rival Atlanta Falcons, a league source confirmed that the team will bring in former kicker John Carney for a workout Monday.

Why is it trite? It's specific to these particular individuals. Bryant cheated on his wife and may or may not have raped a woman. Woods cheated on his wife, abundantly. Do you consider that to be respectful? Perhaps you don't find that behavior objectionable?

Tico, JPB and AndyClubber are at 11-4. All 3 have Green Bay tonight with Tico predicting a final score of 23-20. JPB says 21-10 while Andy thinks it will be 24-10.
EhBeth, Jespah and Edgar are at 10-5. EhBeth and Edgar also have Green Bay so they can't win the week. Jespah has Chicago winning 24-17. If the Bears do beat the Packers there will be a 4 way tie to break.

@realjohnboy,
If the Bears win, then Jespah gets the win for the week.
Even thought there will be a tie, she is better looking then the others that would be tied with her, so she gets the victory.
Case closed!!!

I just read that the 49ers laid off Jimmy Raye, the offensive coordinator that was part of the bruhaha about the Communication Gap of Week 1. I thought Week 3's mess might have been communication screw up too, plus whatever other boo boos in play selection, and carrying out the plays.

I'd quote the San Jose Mercury sports news that I read last night on the 49er's game 3 - molto depressing - but I can't find it, what with all the recent articles and blogs..

What on earth does "may or may not have raped a woman" mean?

I don't find the behaviour objectionable or not objectionable. It's what people do in our society and they are free to do it. I don't know anything worth knowing about the circumstances in either case. Throwing a toffee paper on the sidewalk is objectionable officially. If there are no legal sanctions against adultery, as there are in some countries, we must find it less objectionable than littering.

What's the alternative? A woman gets a monopoly on her husband's sexual satisfaction? For life? You would have to segregate the sexes and make seductive dressing illegal.

Why is another marriage/relationship after a divorce not cheating?

Proper marriage guidance counselling starts with "You're both to blame".

It's as bad as trying to get cost free Brownie points for compassion using a story in a paper about a fighting dog when millions of animals are routinely mistreated, many unspeakably, in food production, zoos, competitions and scientific experiments without a peep of protest. As if all that is neutralised with a weepie.

There are people on these threads who shoot animals and they often wound them and they escape to die a miserable death in the wild. Out of sight out of mind eh?

And I didn't start this. When I got criticised for some mid-week banter it was about football and sport. There won't be any criticism for this digression though because it wasn't spendi who did it.

Anyway--congrats on your recent Pick-Um form. I would be 10-5 but for the Saints missing a 27 yarder. So if you had the Falcons that's the difference. I have the Packers too. And I'm the man to beat.

Tell me--is a Time Out so that strategies can be discussed? And what's the 2 minute warning for? Are they ad breaks?

@spendius,
At first I thought you (and Tico) had misplaced a post? Can you and Tico redirect such inflammatory comments (about rape etc.) to an appropriate thread? There already is an unique thread whose topic is about rape. This thread is (or WAS) a thread about picking NFL games and, at the very least, about sports.

@spendius,
Actually Tico I think I've worked out why our culture encourages adultery. I thought it through in the bath just now. I don't suppose you want to know the theology so I won't bother you with it unless you ask me to.

But our culture does encourage it. I can't see how that can be denied. So much so, and so successfully, that it might be cheating to shirk one's responsibilities in this regard.

@spendius,
One more time: would you please start your own separate topic on such an inflammatory topic. This is not why I (or 99% of this thread) come here. Several other people have already weighed in on this matter, but you don't seem to want to consider their wishes. I rarely use ignore, but if you persist on going there, I would be forced to do so.

The only reason we were addressing a hot-button topic direction towards dog fighting and character issues was it was abourt Michel Vick. This surfaced because it was about his character issue and NFL QB that has just become improved performer and is on the lips of all the talk shows.
