SAN FRANCISCO — After several hours of hearings, San Francisco officials have tabled a measure that would have banned the sale of pets,(including dogs/cats) except fish, throughout the city.

During the hearings that began Thursday evening and ran into the night, supporters of the ban said animal shelters are overrun by people who buy hamsters, parrots, snakes and other animals from pet stores on impulse, then regret the purchase.

Under the proposal, San Francisco residents would have had to go outside the city to purchase pets.

Pet store owners argued against the measure, telling the city's

Commission of Animal Control and Welfare that it would put them out of business.

When it comes to problem solving (especially debt management) California takes the cake. It appears the brain drain has taken it's toll.

@dyslexia,
You can still purchase animals at a shelter, can't you? I feel for the pet store owners but if it's such a big problem, they need to deal with it somehow. Maybe people have to post a bond when they buy a pet?

This reminds me of when the smoking ban came in, all the restaurants and bars said they'd lose business. I still see people drinking and eating out, though.

@Mame,
good thinking ding-bat, so now if you want to buy a dog or cat or parrot you drive to Oakland. Problem solved, right? at least you made a valid point with buying from a shelter.

@Mame,
Add a pet tax to help pay for shelters.

Make the pet stores have to take back within a certain time-frame the animals they sell just as other merchandise is done. That way, maybe they'll be a bit more discerning about the buyers, and animals they sell.

@dyslexia,
My instinct is on your side. On the other hand, SF people may have their reasons (fight dogs, hotting stray dogs?)

I don't know enough, and others may know more than you do.

I can't think of anything good about pet stores, so this sounds fine to me.

Go to a shelter. Get rid of pet stores, puppy mills, all that idiocy.

Pets sold in pet stores arrived there from the terrible puppy mills. I recently read that now some come from other countries - God only knows how the puppy's parents were treated but most have some kind of illness, so "they" say. You know, "made in China."

We can do what people used to do, check out the classifieds. I don't like going in the one pet store here that sells puppies. That's pathetic - most look 3, 4 months old. Where have they been? Now and then I see protestors from Peta (whatever they call themselves).

@ossobuco,
May as well just call you Sleeping Beauty then.

If I were going to buy a pet, I'd buy it at a shelter. Those animals have been abandoned and the shelter isn't making any profit and they're providing a good service. There are volunteers that go in there and walk and love them. The pet store, on the other hand, is a business, out for profit, and I always wonder how much loving those animals get. Sometimes those cages are really crowded. Do the puppies get out for walks? Very sad.

I'd ban them just from that POV.

bull ****. every pet (except fred the parrot) I've ever had came from a shelter. I am no fan of "pet stores" nor am I a fan of really inane laws are are not enforceable. this proposed law does zero for the betterment of pets. neutering/spaying and enforcement of loose dog laws might make a difference as well as very strict regulations of "pet stores". In simple terms (something californians seem unable to comprehend) try for once problem solving instead of just making more laws. This "dys hates california" crap is just that--"crap" and if your are sooo thin skinned you can't cope with reality put me on ignore or at the very least don't read my posts. Sally-dog adds BITE ME.

There are probably many things we could do to reduce, if not eliminate, this problem, you're right, dys. Some reactions, like these ineffective laws, are just a lame-brain attempt to deal with something they're not qualified (intelligence-wise) to deal with. Another possible consequence of doing away with pet stores is that some people (yahoos) would capitalize on that and possibly do more damage to the pets and pet industry. They would sell them on the black market, there'd be no guarantee the dog was neutered or had its shots, you don't know its origin, etc etc etc.

Perhaps we could do away with stupid meddling in other people's lives and the enactment of nonsensical restrictions on them. Unfortunately that would put the San Francisco Board of Supervisors out of commission forever. They are, at best, a local joke.
