This article from the "Daily Mirror" might find your special interest (no, I didn't find it re Page 3 but got the link from the BBC! Laughing ):

Quote:
1 IN 5 GET XMAS SEX AT OFFICE

WORKERS get more than just jolly over the festive season, according to a survey that shows one in five have sex in the office.

The staff meeting room is the most popular venue, followed by the boss's desk, stationery cupboard and the car park.

And a third have been caught in the act.

Even if they don't have sex, four in 10 admit they use the Christmas party as an excuse to "pull".

Booze plays a major part, according to 1,500 workers polled by razor firm Wilkinson Quattro.

Their spokesman said: "After a few drinks our confidence increases."

One in nine also admit embarrassing dancing - like David Brent in hit comedy The Office.

Did you check the conference room and lunch room? Maybe they're all hiding and waiting for you to stumble upon the surprise party for you. Cool

Gautam- Were these people who went to lunch without you former peers, or people who now work under you? One of the things about becoming a boss is the change in the balance of relationships.

In some companies, bosses do not socialize with employees. If the people who went to lunch without you are peers, they need time to know you. You need to build a track record and a network of new relationships.

In any case, IMO right now you need to focus on learning the new job.

Hmmm...to be honest, I dont know as of now who are my peers and who are the people who work under me - the formal introductions are yet to be performed.

But the starnge thing is that this guy came arnd (we sit in open bays in tech, my only gripe) and asked everyone arnd me for lunch, except me (and he was an Indian)

Have overheard today morning - "So <name of my MD> has bought in another of his cowboys eh ?"

I really need to find that whip !

It seems that there is a resentment in your office when any new person is brought in. Seems that the anger is not towards you, personally, but towards the person who promoted you. Most people do not like change, and right now, they do not know what to expect from you, and are understandably anxious about it.

Right now, the people are testing you. If I were you, I would behave as if nothing untowards is happening. Be your charming, brilliant, self, and after awhile, you will be accepted. Also, before you begin to become friendly you really need to know who is whom, and the unique interrelationships of this group of workers.

Another thing. The primary job of a boss is to get things done. If you make friends, fine. But I have seen too many people lose their respect as an authority figure, because they put friendliness, and being accepted, before the main thrust of the job...........seeing to it that what needs to happen in the office, happens.

One caveat. As a new boss, you need to be careful in socializing with your employees. Oftimes if you are too friendly with some employees, there may be resentment that you are engaging in "favoritism". Some staff will attempt to butter you up, in the hope of extracting favors from you.

I think that you need to really take time scrutinize the lay of the land, before you jump in, and possibly make mistakes that will affect your effectiveness in your position.

Congratulations Gautam on your promotion.

One thing - as the new boss, shouldn't YOU have invited your staff to lunch on the first day? I know that each time I got a new boss, he/she invited us out as a group and gave a little pep talk about who he/she was and how they would be doing things and getting to know each of us. Made us feel important and less wary of him/her (and I have had MANY MANY bosses).

One thing I don't respect is too much friendliness. I never worked well for a boss I didn't respect. A good measure of approachability and decisiveness with excellent communication skills makes for a good boss. Be fair but firm.

Jaysus you'd think I'd know what I'm talking about!!!! Personally I'd make a terrible boss. I'd hate to work for me.

Gautum

It wasn't eays with your last position (when I recall our talk correctly and what I read between the lines).

And you did very well on it!

So, just make an experience agin, one, most of us had to undergo equaly more than once in life.

Oh, I'll be fine - these updates are pure tongue in cheek on my first day Smile though the input and views of people are very useful....

My first team meeting is probably tomorrow - boss is verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry busy...

The guy who was running this dept gave me the handover document - I almost fell of my chair laughing - one pricelss line "There are too many activities, I cannot possibly list them all. You will slowly find out all of them by yrself" Laughing

Heeven- Good idea about the lunch.

Gautam- Are you feeling comfortable about doing that yet? I get a sense that you are not exactly sure about your duties yet. Maybe you need to talk to YOUR boss about your responsibilities, so that you will feel more comfortable talking with your staff.

Heeven- Yesterday I saw a man who looked like your avatar (especially around the mouth). I did a double take, and had to hold myself in to keep from cracking up! Laughing
