@edgarblythe,
FORCED LABOUR - GERMAN STYLE

Quote:
A boy of 11 called a German police emergency line to complain of "forced labour" after his mother told him to help clean the home.

Police say the boy from Aachen, who has not been identified, spoke to an officer via the 110 number.

They say he complained: "I have to work all day long. I haven't any free time."

His mother told the officer the boy had kept threatening to call them, having repeatedly complained of having to do housework during the school holidays.

A transcript of the conversation, printed in local newspapers, revealed the officer asking the boy to describe the kind of "forced labour" he was doing.

The boy replied that he had to clean the home and terrace, it said.

Asked if he knew what forced labour was, the boy said he did, and the police officer asked to speak to his mother, who at that stage was standing next to him.

She explained he had called after being asked to pick up paper from the floor, adding: "He plays all day long and when told to tidy up what he's done, he calls it forced labour."

@hamburgboy,
As a child, I, too, performed "forced labor." I had to wash dishes and pull weeds in the garden.

Roman 'gladiators' arrested after clash of swords outside Colosseum

Italian undercover police clamp down on fake centurions who prey on tourists visiting the sites of ancient Rome.

I don't think Russel Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix have to worry.

The one being restrained looks much like the alien in the Bugs Bunny films.

No one made me do anything either, Letty. When I moved away from home, I was helpless and hopeless.

I was carrying the humor. In actual fact - Kids need interaction with adults. Positives and responsibilities. Something I never had. Chores do seem like an enormous weight, when you are yanked out of a lifetime of just being there, like a family pet, and put to drudgery. I felt envious that my older brother was given value by the adults. He alone had any responsibilities. I ached to be asked to take up a few of the tasks he was given.

Meet the Brit girl who dozes off for 2 months at a stretch
By ANI | ANI – Mon, 15 Aug, 2011

London, Aug 15 (ANI): A British girl, who suffers from the rare Kleine-Levin Syndrome, is said to nod off to sleep for two months at a time.
Lily Clarke, 21, a student, has slept through university exams, Christmas, New Year and even her own 18th birthday party after falling asleep a few days before.
Her mum Adele, 47, said the condition came on in 2007 after the family went for a meal following a day's ice-skating.
"Before the food arrived Lily had fallen asleep in her chair. We couldn't wake her and had to carry her from the restaurant," the Sun quoted her as saying.
Lily sleeps deeply for about 23 hours a day and is woken just long enough to be fed at her parents' home in Haslemere, Surrey.
She now sleeps for an average of two months at a time roughly every seven months.
"She is missing out on huge chunks of her life," Adele added.
There is no known cure for the syndrome but medics say it usually affects young people - so Lily may grow out of it. (ANI)

What an athol!! Smile

But the authorities are athols too. It cost somewhere near $50K to keep a person in jail for a year. Nobody wins here. In fact everyone loses. An exceedingly stiff fine or forced donations to that charity would be a much wiser use of state authority.

@JTT,
At least community service might be a good alternative to prison. Even if he gets off after a month or two or whatever time for good behavior.

Not Snowbirds but Heatbirds.

Study: Animals are moving north about 15 feet (5 metres) a day to try to escape global warming

WASHINGTON - Animals across the world are fleeing global warming by heading north much faster than they were less than a decade ago, a new study says.
About 2,000 species examined are moving away from the equator at an average rate of more than 15 feet (5 metres) per day, about a mile per year, according to new research published Thursday in the journal Science which analyzed previous studies. Species are also moving up mountains to escape the heat, but more slowly, averaging about 4 feet a year.
The species — mostly from the Northern Hemisphere and including plants — moved in fits and starts, but over several decades it averages to about 8 inches (20 centimetres) an hour away from the equator.
"The speed is an important issue," said study main author Chris Thomas of the University of York. "It is faster than we thought."
Included in the analysis was a 2003 study that found species moving north at a rate of just more than a third of a mile (500 metres) per year and up at a rate of 2 feet (0.61 metres) a year. Camille Parmesan of the University of Texas, who conducted that study, said the new research makes sense because her data ended around the late 1990s and the 2000s were far hotter.
