Rik Mayall is my favourite comedian after Peter Cook. I like lots of comics but only a top two, I don't know who would be number three, but there are dozens of contenders.
Neither Mayall nor Cook fared well in America. Mayall did one film, Drop Dead Fred, and that was it. Peter Cook got a part as a butler in a short lived sit com.
Meanwhile the likes of Ricky Gervais, Russell Brand and James Corden knock it out of the park.
In a nutshell that's why we're critical of American humour.
Dudley Moore also hit the heights, and in fairness he was very funny and talented, but of the partnership Peter Cook was so much funnier. Listen to some Derek and Clive and you hear Moore losing it and collapsing with laughter over and over again.
