@tsarstepan,
Why do people make **** up? Did you see the remark on the site that reported the same photo had been entitled by somebody as "A Boy Chained his Bicycle to a Tree when he went to war in 1914." Horseshit.
The other day I saw this pathetic poem put on Facebook supossedly written by, are you ready?, William Shakespeare. GAH!!

@Joe Nation,
I saw that erroneous WWI headline/photo tag before I even saw the photograph. Clearly its a postWWII tech bike. I assumed that the person starting this rumor/label either failed history or just wanted to get extra views/hits on the photograph.

When Tim Geithner became Treasury Secretary, he changed his loopy signature to be more legible on the dollar bill. Don't let Jack Lew make the same mistake! We demand Lew's doodle on every dollar in circulation.

Governor, I have good news and bad news. The good news is that there will be a rally supporting you and your stand on freedom of religion. The bad news is:

@Joe Nation,
Of course he (probably) took their donation checks (if any) and shamelessly deposited them in his reelection campaign without blinking.

@tsarstepan,
Yeah I need to buy a recording device or some audio sound effects. They cost a few bucks each but I need walk, trot, gallop sounds for 30 different animals, so it adds up quickly, and that's just for movement fx, then add 3-5 unique sounds for each and it's hundreds of sounds.

@tsarstepan,
Tsar - I'm in the midst of some rethinking on this post of yours that was re this article - about a big landscape clearance that happened at the Sepulveda dam basin:
http://laist.com/2012/12/30/us_army_corps_says_they_razed_the_s.php

Here's what I said -

That area has flooded over and over for years, don't know if it is still doing it.

Cottonwoods and Willows have questionable business being there.
Western cottonwood is a california native but it is problematic with its greedy roots and its water need, though it's true it is a basin area; they sucker with root disturbance. They get many pests. They don't do all that well where winters aren't cold, and they really aren't in that place. So that's a maybe to me, with a frown. Willows, no, to me. Shallow invasive roots again, need regular to ample water (ample in the valley, I've no doubt, and the area doesn't naturally get a lot of water a year). If there is a california native one, it's not in my source books. They are weak wooded and short lived, subject to a lot of pests.

Lots of improper tree choices were made in the eighties; although these may be defensible, maybe there are smarter choices.
The Army Corps of Engineers has famously made lots of errors in the past, but they very well might know what they are doing in this Sepulveda Basin situation. Among other things, they may be redoing it for better long term site health, including that of wildlife.

I have a couple of landscape architecture colleagues that I would listen to on this, so I'll email them re their opinions. They both know the shaping of the basin better than I do, and the current planting. (I been by the basin but never walked it.)
~ end of quoting myself ~

Today I saw an article in the LA Weekly that makes me rethink, that what I said isn't the whole story -
http://www.laweekly.com/2013-01-10/news/sepulveda-wildlife-clearcut-homophobia-army-corps-recriminations/

I still wasn't buying that the Corps of Engineers was definitely off base, given that flood control in a dam break matters, and that's still true -
until I got to the quote from the landscape architect for the Corp of Engineers. That put me off into thinking 'hmmmm'. Of course, I haven't seen the project plans, maybe what they're doing is actually a good idea, re demo, grading, and replanting.

Those two friends I said I want to check with are very knowledgeable land archs and gays (yes! at the same time!) and, having not written my holiday letters yet, I still haven't asked them their opinions. Will report if I find out more.
